I watched his Belmont live on TV. My jaw dropped. Unreal.

I was 12 years old and had an uncle who lived in New Jersey. He passed away and the funeral was on that day. We rushed back to his house to catch the race. $5 to pick a horse out of the hat. I won the pool... :-)

It was before my time. I was a two year old “mush head” when this race happened.
What a horse Secretariat was and what an amazing race he ran at the Belmont.
Completely burned out Sham early, Sham wanted to keep pace but couldn’t, then Secretariat just maintained the jets.

My father was dying at the time, but he had always watched the big races and was routinely at the tracks. I’m sure we would have been there with him if he’d been able.

I watched it. Depressing to realize it was 50 years ago.

I was in high school. My parents were always into the big races. We all watched and could not believe what we were seeing. My mom was almost in tears and was convinced that God was guiding Secretariat to the finish. It was tremendous to see live. I'm so glad I was around.

Only wish it was free capusella making the call. He would have said: they are not going to catch the champ today!!
