1:21 · now if you're wondering what I'm
1:22 · referring to
1:24 · a number of years back in Beijing I met
1:26 · up with a black South African lady
1:28 · who had a little bit of an issue with my
1:31 · videos about South Africa you see she
1:33 · thought that I was being unrealistic and
1:34 · too too harsh in my criticism of South
1:37 · African we had a very reasonable chat
1:39 · but constantly and during the chat she
1:42 · would push the the ANC party line that
1:45 · oh there's nothing wrong and that it's
1:48 · uh
1:49 · you know apartheid's fault that the
1:51 · Power Systems are failing in South
1:53 · Africa and that the ANC government is
1:56 · you know gonna fire up some old coal
1:58 · reactors everything's going to be fine
2:00 · they know what they're doing they're
2:01 · making a plan well guess what that's
2:04 · they didn't make a plan and now
2:06 · it's so bad in South Africa that the
2:08 · power is off between 6 and 13 hours a
2:13 · day
2:14 · now I'm not making this up guys for this
2:17 · entire year so far every single day of
2:19 · the year the power has been off
2:21 · Nationwide in South Africa and it just
2:24 · depends on your area
2:26 · and it depends on the time of year but
2:28 · it can be up to 16 hours of power off
2:32 · during the day
2:34 · now how this works it's called load
2:36 · shedding is you have an app from escom
2:38 · which is the the government-owned power
2:41 · company and it will alert you and it's
2:44 · going to say to you hey for instance
2:46 · you're going to have your power cut
2:47 · between 10 AM and 2 p.m okay and then
2:52 · you'll have it on for maybe two or three
2:54 · hours and then it'll go off between 6 pm
2:57 · and 9 p.m that type of thing you know
2:59 · and it'll add up so I'll just show you a
3:01 · screenshot I asked my my parents to send
3:03 · me a screenshot of their app the other
3:05 · day
3:06 · here it is 11 and a half hours of power
3:08 · cuts on that particular day
3:12 · now you might think to yourself well I
3:14 · mean that's kind of crazy and I'm pretty
3:16 · sure most of you out there aren't used
3:17 · to the idea of not having power at all
3:19 · if you live in a developed country even
3:21 · heck even in the developing world even
3:23 · if you're living in the back Waters of a
3:26 · developing World somewhere you probably
3:27 · have more power on during the day than
3:29 · South Africa but remember this has
3:31 · happened every single day this year and
3:33 · in the previous years pretty much the
3:35 · whole year it's the same deal
3:37 · but you may not realize just how bad
3:40 · this is think about it just yourself not
3:43 · only do you have to power all your
3:44 · normal devices like phones and computers
3:46 · and you know the usual stuff watching TV
3:48 · TVs all your electronic devices that you
3:51 · use every day you know that we take for
3:52 · granted your Apple watch everything has
3:55 · to be charged everything needs power
3:57 · forget those amenities think about the
3:59 · basics okay you're coming home from work
4:03 · and your garage door doesn't open
4:05 · because there's no power
4:07 · do you understand how devastating that
4:08 · can be to be locked out of your own
4:10 · house because you can't open up your
4:11 · electric gate you can't open up your
4:12 · garage
4:13 · anyway so you park your car you manually
4:17 · unlock your door you walk in you pull
4:18 · that lever you open up your garage
4:20 · whatever you can get into your house now
4:21 · you got no lights
4:23 · what if you need to go to the gas
4:24 · station to get some gas
4:26 · but the power is off and so the pumps
4:28 · aren't working so you can't pump gas now
4:30 · you might think that that's something
4:32 · that shouldn't happen they'll have
4:33 · backup power no before I left South
4:36 · Africa this happened to me a number of
4:37 · times
4:38 · I'd be very low on gas or petrol and I'd
4:42 · go to the local petrol station and the
4:43 · power would be off at the petrol station
4:45 · and I couldn't pump
4:47 · petrol or gas into my car and I'd have
4:49 · to make a plan and try to limp to the
4:52 · next station you know in a different
4:53 · area or whatever to try and find petrol
4:56 · it's basic things like this that you
4:58 · kind of don't think about
5:01 · if you own a business
5:03 · let's say a restaurant
5:05 · how do you keep your food fresh you have
5:08 · your meat you have your vegetables all
5:09 · your ingredients that are in the back in
5:11 · a big freezer or in fridges and they're
5:14 · all refrigerated and so on
5:16 · when the power goes off all your food
5:18 · goes bad because sometimes the power
5:20 · goes off not just for a couple of hours
5:22 · it can go for an entire day or entire
5:24 · week in some cases it depends on like
5:26 · the circumstances in the area but
5:28 · currently you can be guaranteed the
5:30 · power is going to go off for at least
5:32 · six hours a day minimum so they got six
5:35 · hours of your refrigerator is not
5:38 · working of course you can't run a
5:40 · restaurant like that okay and many have
5:42 · closed now a lot of you might think hey
5:43 · well what about just putting in a
5:45 · generator or some kind of solar panels
5:47 · and so on to mitigate this well here's
5:50 · the thing
5:51 · the average generator that you can buy
5:53 · you know you pull start or you know you
5:55 · buy these kind of fairly big you can buy
5:57 · something from Harbor Freight or you can
5:59 · buy a Honda or whatever well first of
6:01 · all they're expensive and second of all
6:03 · they actually suck
6:05 · you know the kind of generator that
6:07 · people take on an RV or they have in
6:08 · their shed or whatever that cannot power
6:11 · an industrial sized freezer in a
6:13 · restaurant that cannot power the big air
6:16 · conditioning units that are necessary to
6:18 · keep the restaurant nice and cool
6:21 · you know those kind of things can power
6:23 · small appliances here and there yeah I
6:25 · can power your personal fridge at home
6:27 · it can power your TV you know your very
6:29 · Basics but that can't power a business
6:31 · if you're going to power up a restaurant
6:33 · and I'm using a restaurant as an example
6:35 · here but this of course applies to every
6:37 · kind of business out there you need a
6:39 · big generator something that's capable
6:41 · of putting out the amount of wattage and
6:43 · energy that's needed to run large-scale
6:45 · systems and they're very expensive to
6:48 · buy incredibly expensive to buy
6:50 · especially in South Africa there's a
6:52 · premium on generators they're incredibly
6:54 · expensive to run not only just to
6:56 · maintain them but to actually fuel them
6:59 · with gas or with diesel or whatever they
7:01 · run on so if you're running a small
7:03 · restaurant it kind of destroys your
7:07 · business because well not only do you
7:09 · have to deal with the lights going off
7:11 · and the air conditioner is not working
7:12 · and all the food going bad in the back
7:14 · but if you do manage to keep things
7:17 · running with generators and so on now
7:18 · you've got a lot of noise
7:20 · and second of all it's going to cost you
7:23 · a lot more because now you've got a huge
7:24 · gas bill you know as in a petrol bill
7:26 · that you have to pay on top of all your
7:28 · rent in your your Staffing and all that
7:31 · kind of stuff so now you have to raise
7:32 · your prices so you get the idea it
7:34 · really doesn't work out so lots of small
7:36 · businesses in South Africa have of
7:38 · course had to shut down because of this
7:40 · and there's very little incentive to
7:42 · open a business under these
7:44 · circumstances
7:45 · we spend a lot of Our Lives turning
7:48 · things on
7:54 · always the
7:55 · big something
7:56 · fun productive wonderful nerve-wracking

8:05 · there is however one thing we should
8:07 · never ever forget to turn on if we're
8:10 · using the internet and that is a VPN

9:39 · this power thing and the only reason he
9:41 · declared a state of emergency is it
9:43 · gives the government certain leeway and
9:46 · powers to do things that normally would
9:48 · have to be approved through Parliament
9:49 · and stuff so if it's a state of
9:50 · emergency they don't have to agree on
9:52 · you know where this budget money goes it
9:55 · can just be used because it's a state of
9:57 · emergency so the state of emergency is
9:59 · just another excuse to steal money from
10:01 · the government it's not actually going
10:03 · to repair anything I'll tell you that
10:04 · much
10:05 · friend of mine received a letter from
10:07 · his insurance company in South Africa
10:09 · and the insurance company said that they
10:11 · will not cover any costs or damage
10:13 · related to complete grid failure
10:17 · now
10:19 · you know when insurance companies are
10:21 · trying to cover their ass like that that
10:22 · they suspect that something like that is
10:24 · going to happen why else would they be
10:26 · doing that he's not the only one who's
10:27 · received that sort of letter from their
10:30 · insurance company in South Africa for
10:32 · those of you who don't know what a
10:33 · complete grid failure is well if you've
10:36 · ever seen the movie Mad Max
10:38 · you know to the road warrior
10:41 · that's complete grid failure
10:43 · that's when the entire power grid stops
10:46 · working
10:47 · so you can no longer use the Machinery
10:50 · to pump the fuel to put into the trucks
10:52 · to drive the trucks to bring the fuel
10:54 · and the goods and the whatever's
10:56 · necessary to the different stations and
10:58 · power stations and and the grocery
11:00 · stores or whatever everything grinds to
11:02 · a halt the grocery stores no longer can
11:05 · fill the shelves because there's no
11:08 · transport anymore right because
11:10 · everything's messed up the computer
11:12 · systems that talk to each other to run
11:15 · everything that we're used to in our
11:17 · daily lives like the traffic lights and
11:19 · you know banking all that kind of stuff
11:21 · all shut down complete grid failure
11:23 · means complete chaos complete grid
11:25 · failure is a possibility for the near
11:28 · future in South Africa
11:30 · of course everything is going to be done
11:32 · to prevent this but I'm just saying if
11:34 · insurance companies are worried about it
11:37 · happening and sending letters to their
11:38 · clients you know that it's a definite
11:40 · possibility so that's how it stands in
11:42 · South Africa people are dealing with not
11:44 · having power every single day Nationwide
11:46 · but how did it get there
11:49 · well it's quite simple it's because the
11:51 · government wanted it to get there or the
11:53 · government was too incompetent to
11:54 · prevent it from getting there is
11:56 · actually more accurate you see
11:59 · the power infrastructure in South Africa
12:01 · was built during the 50s mostly the the
12:03 · current stuff
12:04 · and for all intents and purposes really
12:06 · good stuff did the job but when you've
12:09 · got aging power infrastructure like that
12:11 · it needs to be maintained it needs to be
12:13 · upgraded it needs to be expanded
12:16 · so when the ANC took over
12:18 · they were given the Playbook on how to
12:19 · do this
12:21 · Jacob Zuma in particular
12:24 · decided to give all of the money that
12:26 · was supposed to be used to upgrade and
12:28 · maintain the infrastructure
12:30 · to his family members through corrupt
12:32 · tenderpreneurship and so on so basically
12:34 · what you do is you say okay we need to
12:36 · upgrade the infrastructure you're my
12:38 · cousin I'm going to call you the new
12:40 · minister of upgrading infrastructure
12:42 · here's a couple of billion ran tender
12:44 · and go upgrade the infrastructure but
12:47 · actually don't worry about it just go
12:48 · buy yourself a bunch of BMWs in a
12:50 · mansion and call it a day so that's
12:52 · oversimplification of course but
12:54 · billions and billions of Rand that was
12:56 · meant to go to upgrading the
12:58 · infrastructure Rand by the way is the
13:00 · South African funny money
13:02 · um it's the currency which is completely
13:05 · useless now
13:06 · so anyway
13:08 · um all the money that was supposed to go
13:09 · into uh upgrading the infrastructure and
13:11 · fixing it
13:13 · got flushed down the toilet to
13:15 · corruption got given to family members
13:18 · so the first solution is of course out
13:20 · the window now you cannot really expect
13:22 · much from a government when the
13:24 · parliament looks like this
13:28 · I withdraw that
13:30 · thank you very much thank you very much
13:34 · so of course there is a way to quite
13:37 · easily overcome this issue and that is
13:39 · to allow private energy companies in to
13:43 · generate electricity and of course I've
13:45 · seen this all over the United States
13:47 · every state seems to have its own little
13:49 · you know power generation and gas
13:51 · provider and so on this is great because
13:53 · when you've got different Power
13:55 · providers of course there's a lot of
13:57 · competition involved you know they'll be
13:59 · striving to provide a better service
14:00 · than the other guy they'll be doing
14:02 · things like undercutting the prices to
14:04 · make themselves look more attractive uh
14:06 · you know to gain more clients so it's
14:07 · very healthy
14:08 · but the ANC government does not want
14:12 · private power companies to come in
14:13 · because then they won't get all the
14:15 · money they won't be able to steal the
14:17 · money because you have to understand
14:18 · that power is something that is so
14:21 · essential that nobody can go without it
14:22 · everybody needs it and so they have a
14:26 · Stranglehold on every single citizen in
14:28 · South Africa if you want Power the only
14:31 · way you can get it is to buy it from
14:33 · escom the government-owned ANC owned
14:37 · infiltrated corrupted entity escom so if
14:40 · another provider came in and could
14:42 · suddenly provide better power cheaper
14:44 · everybody would immediately flock to
14:47 · them and the government would lose out
14:49 · on all those billions of Rands of
14:52 · corrupt money to buy their latest
14:53 · Bentleys and uh private jets
14:56 · I actually have a case in point you see
14:58 · here we have a small town in South
14:59 · Africa where a private company had set
15:01 · up a solar farm now the solar farm was
15:03 · set up for their own purposes they got
15:05 · permission to do it but it was
15:07 · generating too much power and much more
15:09 · power than they were using so they put
15:11 · some of it back into the Grid in the
15:13 · local area and they actually pretty much
15:15 · got rid of load shedding for that little
15:17 · town so the power wouldn't be going out
15:20 · during the day because they were able to
15:21 · put so much power back in but the
15:23 · government actually sued them
15:25 · and prevented them from helping the
15:28 · local town have power during the day
15:30 · because they said it would set an
15:32 · unrealistic uh precedent and other
15:34 · people around the country would want to
15:37 · have the same amount of power during the
15:39 · day or the same axis and so
15:41 · um it's not something that they would
15:43 · allow so they actually stopped them from
15:45 · doing it you see corruption
15:48 · in its pure form like the ANC government
15:51 · is something that simply cannot be
15:54 · tackled
15:55 · you see it's transparent corruption
15:58 · everybody knows the government is
16:00 · corrupt they know everybody knows that
16:03 · they're corrupt but nobody can do
16:04 · anything about it so they just go on
16:07 · being corrupt they'll sign away new laws
16:10 · they'll sign new things into Parliament
16:11 · and all of it is an aid of their
16:14 · corruption
16:16 · South Africa is a joke
16:19 · it's what I said many years ago it's
16:22 · what I've always said there's a reason I
16:23 · left my country of birth there's a
16:25 · reason why I will never go back anyone
16:28 · who is a South African knows exactly
16:30 · what I'm talking about doesn't matter
16:32 · even the people that are pro A and C
16:33 · they know that it's a corrupt mess of a
16:36 · government it's a corrupt useless

16:39 · um and you know with this very little
16:41 · that can actually be done about it
16:42 · unfortunately
16:44 · once again I'm going to use this

16:50 · maybe you can start out and explain what
16:52 · it is you disagree with that video well
16:55 · uh I think the first one the big one is
16:58 · that infrastructure is uh is becoming
17:02 · infrastructure is failing in South
17:04 · Africa so I don't know if I agree with
17:06 · that it is something that's happening
17:09 · it's a real thing well the power going
17:11 · out that's been rectified in my area the
17:14 · power does not go out as frequently as
17:16 · it used to

17:23 · to sum up this video South Africa is in
17:25 · a far worse place than it's ever been
17:28 · on top of the fact that there's no power
17:30 · there's close to 50 percent unemployment
17:33 · rate you know it's like 48.7 or
17:35 · something like that there's a huge I
17:36 · mean can you imagine half of your
17:38 · population being unemployed you know
17:40 · what that leads to when half of the
17:42 · people are lying around out there just
17:45 · ambling around during the day trying to
17:47 · find a way to survive it just leads to
17:49 · Crime because there's no other option
17:52 · what are you gonna do if you want to
17:53 · have clothing if you want to have food
17:55 · you want to be able to buy something how
17:58 · do you do it you need money you're not
18:00 · going to get money by chewing the grass
18:01 · on the side of the road are you you have
18:03 · to go and Rob people steel rape kill
18:05 · murder maim all that kind of stuff
18:07 · that's what happens in South Africa it's
18:10 · incredibly dangerous to live there
18:12 · it's incredibly difficult to make a
18:14 · living there because not only do you
18:16 · have to put up with the the crime and
18:18 · the the constant
18:20 · for lack of a better word pestering by
18:22 · the government to try and eat every
18:24 · scent they can out of you because it's a
18:26 · corrupt government that has no money and
18:27 · keeps trying to find ways to to get
18:29 · people to to pay them more money you
18:32 · have to deal with that but you also have
18:33 · to deal with the basic infrastructure
18:35 · going out so yeah Power going out
18:37 · traffic light's not working all that
18:38 · kind of stuff I mean it's just a
18:41 · non-starter
18:42 · anyone who's smart or had the means has
18:45 · left already everyone who's trapped
18:47 · there I implore you if you have the
18:49 · chance if you have the means it doesn't
18:50 · matter who you are what background
18:52 · you're from get out of South Africa
18:55 · seriously you can go to uh anywhere else
18:58 · in the world anywhere in the developing
19:01 · world and it's better than South Africa
19:04 · right now because at least you have a
19:06 · chance because the power is on eh anyway

19:41 · think it's a piece of country

19:46 · will never go back to that country
19:49 · and I'm glad I left incredibly glad I
19:52 · left it's the best thing I ever did in
19:54 · my life was to leave South Africa so I'd
19:56 · just like you to know that I'm pretty
19:57 · fair when it comes to my criticism
