Police bodycam footage captured the horrifying moments after a 12-year-old girl allegedly stabbed her nine-year-old brother to death in their Oklahoma home.
The siblings' mother April Lyda told police she was asleep upstairs when her daughter woke her up shortly before midnight to say she had stabbed her brother, Zander.
The girl, who has not been named by police, is heard sobbing and repeatedly apologizing as officers arrived at the downtown Tulsa home on January 5.
The boy was rushed to the hospital and taken into surgery, but died from his injuries shortly after 2:30 a.m. CT.
The edited video, obtained by The Law & Crime Network, begins with the girl running downstairs as she yells, 'I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry.'
As the girl is taken out of the home by police, Lyda appears by the door frame saying the boy has stab wounds on his chest.
'You better pray to God he f*****g lives,' she tells the girl.
'I'm so sorry, momma,' the girl replies. 'I don't know what happened.'
The handcuffed girl then leads police to the knife she supposedly used to stab her brother, which she had thrown out of a window.
Once in the patrol car, the girl asks if she's going to jail as an officer tries to console her saying it's too soon to tell.
'I ruined my life,' she says. 'I ruined my whole future. It's all my fault.'
At one point, the girl appears to pray as she says: 'God, please help me. What the f***. Please. F*** please.'

She told her mother “I don’t know what happened.” As if she doesn’t remember the killing. Yes, it would be interesting to find out what meds she was on and whether it contributed.

That video is one of the most sad things I have ever watched. I will say this though...from the video you learn that the mother has 3 kids by 3 different men. You also learn that the child only seems concerned about her future and her situation and not so much her brother. She wants him to live more for her situation than for his. You also learn that she has been engaging in self harm as she tells the officer she has been cutting her arms. Some wounds were old and nearly healed and some were more fresh. She also references her math teacher and some issues with him. She hated math...he was gone for some time because of cancer, and she started to like math while he was gone, but he just came back and she didn’t like that. Strange things to reference when you just killed your brother. So she clearly has some thought disturbances.
I have been a lawyer for almost 40 years. Many many of those years involved in juvenile law as both a prosecutor and a public defender. I really suspect this child has Reactive Detachment Disorder. One of the most scary conditions for a child.
I suspect the relationship issues with her mom created this condition in the child. It is actually fairly common. Not really trying to blame the mom, but children in broken homes are more likely to develop reactive detachment disorder. They never develop health relationships. RAD is usually caused by neglectful or abusive treatment. Mom may have been more concerned with her need for men than she was her kids. Or, one of the men may have abused her. Mom may have abused her. These are Quite common in RAD cases.
Hallmark signs of RAD are actions that otherwise would be classified as conduct disorder, such as mutilating animals, harming siblings or other family, or harming themselves intentionally. Also indiscriminate and excessive attempts to receive comfort and affection from any available adult, even relative strangers. Also
extreme reluctance to initiate or accept comfort and affection, even from familiar adults, especially when distressed.
Essentially, kids with RA don’t have properly developed consciences. I represented a family that adopted a girl with RAD. DHS did not tell the family she had RAD. Within months, the kid had killed the family cat. They caught her in their son’s room with a knife. And then finally, they woke up one night and the girl was standing over their bed with a knife in her hand apparently fixing to stab the parents. RAD is bad stuff.
sounds like a doctor was trying to treat some likely misdiagnosed RAD or other issue with meds and those likely exacerbated the issue.
My thoughts and prayers are with this child as she has a long sad road ahead of her. If it is RAD...she honestly is not to blame. The adults in her life that failed her are to blame. Kids with RAD do not have the intellectual or emotional ability to process and control their actions in these cases. This girl isn’t a thug. She is a mentally disturbed child who needs intensive therapy and help. Just sad sad sad.

It probably came from being RAISED in a CHRISTIAN home...When you don’t hear it in the home, you automatically LEARN how to speak and be respectful. Too bad others didn’t!!!
Ask anyone born and raised in the 1930’s- 1940’s if that was acceptable language ANYWHERE REGARDLESS of upbringing!

I recall - not specifics - some years back, one state and I believe it might have been MI, passed a law or was thinking of doing so about the language spoken in front of children at public parks or anywhere there was a mix of adults and children. At that time I thought “good idea” but today, I would say “a darned good idea”. I don’t know if it was put into effect or enforced but we definitely need one now as it’s become as popular with CERTAIN segments of society as breathing air! Certainly the people here who are the most vocal about those of us condemning such language aren’t met with that kind of language when they go to shop.. Would they enjoy being greeted by someone behind a cash register using FOUL language? Come to think of it, it probably wouldn’t even register with them!! That’s their DEFAULT system! On the other hand, I would speculate that THEY themselves treat the person BEHIND the counter that way!

The effects of situations on a child must be multiplied by a large factor as they haven’t developed the filters and coping mechanisms to deal with it, and chemical (drug) substitution for these mechanisms is inadequate.
It is an issue of modern times, and I do see it as a symptom of a lack of a loving nuclear family.

If I were a billionaire I would start a school system for boys. Young boys need an energy outlet instead of sitting and reading Shakespeare (I loved Shakespeare). They need to be outside as much as possible building tree houses, bridges, etc. They would learn how to read, do math, science, managing skills and logistics all at the same time while doing something constructive. Putting kids on drugs is a lazy and unimaginative solution.
I agree. May God console the entire family, and provide a safe haven for the 3-year-old with helpers coming alongside who are not crazed by grief or rage.

Yes, we had one who was thought to "need" Ritalin, but we refuses. Turned out, after an extensive allergy panel test, food and pollen allergies were the culprits. Those were successfully treated without psychoactive poisons.
Another thing I noticed in the video...when the police took the girl outside, the mother yelled and cussed her. I understand the emotions of the mother...but it this child had really never exhibited any violent or threatening behavior before, I would think that most parents would also express some concern for the 12 year old and recognize that something was amiss. Her response was more like someone who had seen other abnormal or violent behavior from the girl. Plus, when the policeman was visiting with her at the hospital and requesting a consent to search, she was reluctant and wanted to be there when the search occurred, or have someone present for her benefit. That also tells me that this wasn’t the first incident of issues with the child. RAD kids escalate in their dangerous behavior.
I found a separate article about this case and the family was living at St. Thomas Square Apartments in Tulsa. My daughter used to manage those apartments about 15 years ago. It is gang central. Lots of crime and bad bad folks living there. Not that this caused the murder, but if this child was out and about much in that complex, she had been exposed to all manner of illicit activity. If she does have RAD, then there is sufficient fuel for a raging fire at that complex. Just another thought. People with kids should not be living in a place like St. Thomas Square.

She did ask about him in the car, and when the officer told her he was still in treatment, she said, "Oh, thank God!" She also explained that he had had cancer and had been home for a long time; that this had been his first day back to school; and also that she often was the one to take care of him when her mother was working. Also, her 3-year-old brother goes over to "his" father's house to stay.
So here was a child whose own father is replaced by someone else, and a mom whose attention was on both boys—the one who was profoundly sick, and the other who was a baby and toddler. This girl had not had anyone to pay attention to her (and I mean normal amounts of parental attention) since before her father and mother finally split up — so, probably the age of 7 to 9. Living in an apartment with a sometimes single mom and made to "help" with mom's emotional odessey. Add some kind of medication to the mix, and it all exploded.
Not an excuse; but a reason for compassion, even though it looks as if she did a horrible thing. She needs extensive therapy and care not to become a psychopath through living with all the trashworld kids in juvie until 18. Will she get it? Who knows?
The extensiveness of this video before her trial and disposition of her case is horribly intrusive, and will also follow her around for life. What has happened to our "innocent until proven guilty", "cruel or unusual punishment" or "unreasonable search and seizure" protocols?
I hope there is a local pastor and his wife and congregants who will make her their special project; and another group who will help the mother and surviving brother. God help all of them in that mess of a family.
