U.S. Charles Manson cult follower Leslie Van Houten should be paroled, appeals court rules

A California appeals court said Tuesday that Leslie Van Houten, who participated in two killings at the direction of cult leader Charles Manson in 1969, should be let out of prison on parole.

The appellate court's ruling reverses an earlier decision by Gov. Gavin Newsom to reject parole for Van Houten in 2020. She has been recommended for parole five times since 2016. All of those recommendations were rejected by either Newsom or former California Gov. Jerry Brown, with the latest such rejection coming in March of 2022.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta could ask the California Supreme Court to stop her release. Neither his office nor Newsom's immediately responded to requests for comment on whether they would do so.

I have heard it described that neorochemically following a substantial psychedelic experience the experiencer has the equivalent of a post major disruption event. This makes sense from an evolutionary biology point of view that post disruption there is extra neuroplasticity that enhances ability to change established life patterns. This manifests in psychogical testing, which shows as much as a two standard deviation (?) Reduction in things like anxiety. This is why psychedelics were the subject of research in the 50’s, e.g. Timothy Leary, Bill Wilson (Mr. AA)’ etc.

The dark aspect is that post psychedelic neuroplasticity creates a vulnerability for the entry of pure evil, e.g. the Manson family, and the potential for an evolutionary dead end. Don’t forget Charlie’s federal parol officer had only one parolee and Charlie skated on violations and crimes under circumstance that will never be explained. This all relates to MK Ultra I think because those who studied how Charlie could take advantage of post psychedelic neuroplasticity had no idea how he did it. Don’t forget Ted Kazinski was their attempt.

I think that human societies taking halucinogens has provided a comparative advantage, e.g. Yamnaya vs. Neolithic hunter gatherers. Hallucinogens can be quite helpful for those that suffer with anxiety and PTSD/CPTSD - this is my primary source of interest for this subject.

They were here in Phoenix for a while. I used to go to what my brother and I called 'the river' down to the Rio Verde river and there is a cave there, open and looks out at the river. My brother and I pulled up in his truck and walked up and around the rocks and the river. There were all these hippie kids there, in their 30s or so, this was back in the 80s. They were sitting under this open cave and kind of looking at us, posed and I wondered what they were doing. Years later I realized it was a similar look to when they sat at Spahn together under an open cave. Few years later read that someone from the Manson family had purchased a 'Halloween' house out here and ran it (one of those fake Halloween attraction houses) but the attractions were very bizarre, all dark inside with a play going on, light on the actors acting out someone having an abortion, someone getting robbed and stabbed to death...I think I know where it was. Might've said in the article, can't remember. Out on McDowell and Pima road. That day when we got home we discovered my brother's license plate had been stolen and some papers/info from his truck. Someone got pulled over like a year or two later and the police told my brother about the papers. I think they returned them, not sure.

Microdosing for depression and anxiety etc seems helpful or larger doses in controlled environments and punch out further mental acclimation for sufferers

Like I stated after first time unpleasant I decided to defeat the fear thing if it all and approach it with knowledge and expectation

I found mushrooms and peyote buttons more manageable

I see people today who have panic attacks on high grade weed and edibles

I’m 65 now and my only drug is my wife of many years who has held up miraculously but other some percs on occasion for spondylosis of the neck and RA that’s it though I might smoke weed again one day especially if she did but it just puts her to beddy bye

I like the taste of booze and know my reds and love a crisp lager but I don’t like the anesthetic affect and find booze so detrimental having seen it abused by people I love or loved

Anything in moderation helps folks get through the anxiety of life is ok with me in moderation

A lot of this is just how you’re made and raised and personality you inherit largely

I’ve PTSD mildly not like 6 months A Shau valley but enough and I found clonazopam in therapeutic doses took the edge off and lessened my anger at perceived threat awareness for about a year and fell in love and just quit but that’s just me

Yep....but she ‘willingly’ chose to be under Manson and with his group. She was raised in upper middle class as an elitist type. But as a teenager rebelled , frequently did LSD, ran away from home etc. Then she found the Manson group.

It was also discovered La Bianco’s murder was especially gruesome. Van Houten apparently kept stabbing her even after she was dead. At last 16 times.

During trials she laughed when they were describing LaBinaco’s death - and she carried that attitude even in prison. No remorse whatsoever.

For a time she was on probation and went to the Hollywood Grammy Awards. She certainly though she was going to get off with all her connections.

So she needs to remain in prison for life - she would have been executed had California not lifted the death penalty.

My apartment mates words. Ever since Ronald Reagan every governor of California has been worse and worse, ending with result of Gavin Newsom.

This breaks my ❤️ for young people today. They don’t have the mystery, the giddiness, or the wonderful dating like we had. I’m so very thankful we had no social media back in the day. The thrill of spin the bottle, slow dancing, taking time to get to know someone.....that electric, chemical thrill.
