U.S. Charles Manson cult follower Leslie Van Houten should be paroled, appeals court rules
May 30, 2023 / 6:02 PM / AP
A California appeals court said Tuesday that Leslie Van Houten, who participated in two killings at the direction of cult leader Charles Manson in 1969, should be let out of prison on parole.
The appellate court's ruling reverses an earlier decision by Gov. Gavin Newsom to reject parole for Van Houten in 2020. She has been recommended for parole five times since 2016. All of those recommendations were rejected by either Newsom or former California Gov. Jerry Brown, with the latest such rejection coming in March of 2022.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta could ask the California Supreme Court to stop her release. Neither his office nor Newsom's immediately responded to requests for comment on whether they would do so.

Leslie stabbed Rosemary LaBianca 16 times after she had already been stabbed several times. She is a gruesome killer.
Dorris Day's son was involved with Charles Manson. He lived where Sharon Tate was murdered. He had just moved out of there and Manson was angry with him. The media never told you about this.
add niel young to the list
Guns and Roses recorded one of his songs.
No, she shouldn’t be paroled....by all rights, she should already be dead.
Her attorney went missing in the latter part of the first trial; the famous trial with Charlie and the other girls as co-defendants. She appealed that conviction on the grounds of inadequate representation and her conviction and sentence were overturned. She was tried again resulting in a hung jury and a mistrial was declared. She was out on bond between the second and third trails. She was tried a third time and convicted of felony murder. She was sentenced to seven years to life with the possibility of parole after serving the minimum.
I don't really have an opinion on her suitability for parole. I do know that California routinely paroles worse people than Van Houten but that doesn't mean she should go free. On the other hand, there is a legal standard by which an inmate can obtain parole and she seems to meet that standard and has been recommended for parole before. If we are to have a just system, everyone should be treated the same. That said, I'm all for executing every murderer with in months, if not weeks of their convictions.
The only Manson Family member to have been paroled is Steve Grogan and that happened sometime in the 1980s. He was involved in the murder of Shorty Shea. He told the authorities where the body was buried and was granted parole.
Squeaky used to be on Twitter, still has an account under Lynette Fromme, last post is in 2021.
Pictures of Hitler youth, Nazi’s marching, lots of ‘Charlie is love’.
She hasn’t changed.
She didn’t get life either.
I had zero idea she was on Twitter.
he was the original target of who was to be murdered, he lived at the Tate house and moved out just before the crime...man, are you just guessing at this stuff??...
I forget how I found out. I advise you not to Tweet to her if you had thought of doing that. You probably already had figured this out but you know that gal is trouble with a capital ‘T’ and she still is in contact with many nefarious types from what I saw on her Twitter account but it sure is interesting to read her Tweets.
She seems to be frozen in time. Signs ‘I’m not a girl who misses much’ (except Ford).
P.S. I added the ‘except Ford’part.
Naturally that ‘I’m not a girl who misses much’ line is from the Beatles White album, the big hit at Spahn Ranch back then.
John Lennon’s song, ‘Happiness is a warm gun’. Just in case you were not aware.
I spent 25 years in uniform working in NY State's prison system. New York has had on and mostly off death penalties. Serial murderer Lemuel Smith strangled a female Correctional Officer trainee to death at Green Haven prison in 1981, put her in a 55 gallon drum, and placed the drum in a prison dumpster. It was taken to the outside dump. Once they realized she was missing, they searched the facility, and it was search dogs that led them to the prison dumpster. They found her at the dump site. Smith was already serving time for 5 murders. This was his 6th. He was convicted because they matched his bite mark to the teeth marks on the officer's breasts. He received the death penalty, but he successfully challenged his sentence, and the Judge declared New York State's death penalty was unconstitutional. Smith spent 20 years in segregation. Whether he remains in segregation at this time is unknown, but he's currently at Wende Correctional Facility, a maximum security prison.
I was working at Auburn prison at the time of her death, and several staff and supervisors attended her funeral. Her husband was also an officer working at Clinton Correctional Facility at the time, where they were living at the time. They had three children. Many years later he was promoted to Captain, and worked at my facility. The criminal justice system is broke, and has been broken for a very long time. Nobody does the time for the actual crime they committed anymore. There is way too much plea bargaining taking place.
Lol
No I’m not on Twitter and would never tweet her if I was. I was just astounded she would be on it. I was surprised when you said she was. Yes, I have an old White Album from the early 70’s and know those songs you mention. Now I’ve got to wonder if Squeaky is on Facebook.
But each involve hysterics and malleable girls doing things nobody thinks capable of though admittedly Salem was likely stretched way out of proportion
Think Beatles Hysteria gone amuck
I just don’t see women like this
Although I’ve seen them do violence my own self lol
I just looked at her Twitter account, it’s bizarre. She should not have been released.
I’m friendly with a woman here in Nashville who participated in fed studies at Columbia
As a former early 70s tripper I get it
I don’t advise it today from old man wisdom
Even though Rogan and folks like him have it en vogue now
I did try to approach it after my first experience was poor from a serious perspective
Steeped on Watts Huxley and Ken
I knew some brotherhood guys so we got nick sands product which was heady but those doses were simply too strong
Nobody knew better
I conquered it but that bad experience always lurked back there like the Green Manalishi lol
I can laugh now cause a 8-12 hour panic attack is no fun
Sick and inhabited by Satan honestly
I saw a movie about the religious psychiatrist who reached Atkins and Van Houten
Krenwinkle stayed Charlie bound
Just bizarre evil
That’s not the entire list. There were kids coming and going in addition to that group.
I had a classmate from high school who would run away from home and end up in Hollywood. This would have been fall 1968. He’d bounce back to OC and want us to go with him to hang out with what he called “the family”. To us it sounded something like a rock group so it must have been when Dennis Wilson was letting them live at his house.
A few years later I worked at an OC restaurant with a 20 something girl who barely spoke. She could speak, she just didn’t do it much. I asked her sister what was up with that, and she said “oh, Leslie used to live with the Manson family and they took too many drugs” which was easy to believe in her case.
So no one knows for sure just how many “Family Members” there were in all?
That is a tragedy. I think we’ve finally gotten to the point that the system openly cares more for the criminals than it does for the productive people.
