Disney is under fire for 'wokery' slipped into its live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, which is projected to bring in $100 million for the company despite mixed reviews this Memorial Day weekend.
Critics and audiences have given the reboot of the 1989 animated classic 'average' and 'unfavorable' reviews on ratings site Metacritic. Some bash the makers' efforts to update the film to contemporary social mores.
Naysayers have focussed on tweaks to the plot and lyrics that play around with sex, ethnicity and cultural values to make the 125-minute remake fit with Disney's progressive politics.

I wasn’t planning on seeing it anyway. The only two Disney remakes I liked were the 2016 version of “The Jungle Book” and the 2019 remake of “The Lion King”.
This remake makes the Little Mermaid tale even less realistic given that we’re supposed to believe those actors can swim.
Just a bunch of stupid garbage. The poor kids of today need something lovely, not all that propaganda trash.
When I was a kid, I read Hans Andersen’s original version of “The Little Mermaid” (Copenhagen: Reitzel, 1837) and didn’t like it, so I never saw the movie.
If Disney really wanted to get butts in seats, they would bring the classics back to theaters the 30 somethings have children now.
Back in the 1980s, my feminist late mother-in-law gave our children the earliest example of woke propaganda for children I know of: a picture book reimagining of “The Little Engine That Could,” as retold by “Waddy Piper.” In the new version, the titular Little Engine was female, and all the haughty larger engines were oppressive male machines. Of course, the male engines failed to get up the hill, while the plucky female Little Engine made it through sheer determination and, I suppose, to strike a blow against the patriarchy.

Yes - that’s what they used to do with great success. I didn’t realize 101 Dalmatians was decades old when I went to see it in theaters as a child - and the theater was full.
Disney has lost the will to live

Wow, that sounds perfectly awful! You’re a lot nicer than I am because I would have read it to the kids only once, and that would be with a lot of editorializing so as not to pass on the MIL’s toxic feminism.
