Back in the 1980s, my feminist late mother-in-law gave our children the earliest example of woke propaganda for children I know of: a picture book reimagining of “The Little Engine That Could,” as retold by “Waddy Piper.” In the new version, the titular Little Engine was female, and all the haughty larger engines were oppressive male machines. Of course, the male engines failed to get up the hill, while the plucky female Little Engine made it through sheer determination and, I suppose, to strike a blow against the patriarchy.

Wow, that sounds perfectly awful! You’re a lot nicer than I am because I would have read it to the kids only once, and that would be with a lot of editorializing so as not to pass on the MIL’s toxic feminism.
