Majority of United States Faces 'Elevated Risk' of Summer Power Blackouts Amid Green Energy Push
Washington Free Beacon ^ | 22 May, 2023 | Collin Anderson

America's increased reliance on green energy in favor of coal and gas has a majority of the United States facing an "elevated risk" of summer power blackouts, according to a leading grid reliability watchdog.

The North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) last week published its 2023 summer reliability assessment, which found that two-thirds of North America could face power shortages this summer during periods of extreme heat. That vulnerability, the watchdog group said, stems from America's increase in green power generation and decrease in fossil fuel power plants. While coal and natural gas plants can be turned on and off at the flip of a switch, green alternatives such as wind and solar rely on favorable weather conditions to operate at full capacity. If those conditions aren't met, power demand can outpace supply.

"The system is closer to the edge," NERC director of reliability assessment and performance analysis John Moura said last week. "More needs to be done."

Moura is far from the only expert sounding the alarm on America's unreliable power grid. Both state and federal officials in recent weeks have warned that high summer temperatures, combined with low nightly winds, could bring power blackouts across the country. "I'm afraid to say it, but I think the United States is heading towards a catastrophic situation," Federal Energy Regulatory Commission member Mark Christie said during a May Senate hearing.

Despite those warnings, President Joe Biden has moved forward with plans to accelerate U.S. coal plant retirements. With nearly half of America's coal power already set to disappear by 2030, Biden's Environmental Protection Agency earlier this month unveiled new standards that force coal and gas power plants to slash their carbon emissions by a whopping 90 percent between 2035 and 2040. In order to meet the near-impossible standards, those plants will...

These coal and gas plants may just shut down rather than spend the money to comply with the Xao Bi-Dung edicts.

This isn't NYC 1965.

Nowadays, when cities in the USA black out, they burn.

“More needs to be done.” — John Moura, NERC director of reliability assessment and performance analysis

As long as “more” means far LESS of the extreme green lunacy, I agree. There is no way to add more intermittent sources and not have widespread system failures.

Newsome will allow the Dominion machines to have backup generators.

We installed a 26 kW natural-gas fired generator with an automatic transfer switch 18 months ago for two reasons: 1) outages due to bad storms and tree falls and 2) I saw this green lunacy leading to the disaster the author and experts are describing. There will be a run on gensets and electrical contractors in the near future.

You can ignore reality, but you can’t ignore the consequences of ignoring reality.

The wealth sovereigns causing this crisis will not be impacted by it.

Do you think it’s a good idea to leave them in power?

That is one way to cut energy use.

Same.

I have a giant water cooled model far too large for my house on the theory it may have to run for several weeks.

I also have solar that banks about 8 hours peek power a day during the summer. I could limp by with that, as well.

A pool full of water, a well (that can easily run on solar), and gather my rainwater (used for the pool).

They should shut down for the summer. And while they are at it, figure out something their employees can do to get a paycheck during the shutdown. They can call it, maintenance.

AZ has hydro, solar and nuclear.
As I was taught at Intel, always have a backup plan.

We NEVER sign up for “green energy”!!

The sun does not always shine, and the wind does not always blow. And batteries cannot store enough energy to meet our needs!

Climate jockeys are our misfortune!! PHOOEY to ALL of them!!!!

I used to work in the energy business. The energy companies did a fine job over the past 150 years. If you look at the pipeline grid (distribution of oil and nat gas) it is amazing the investment that companies poured into serving their customers. Ditto for electric generation companies. Now because the average American has become so ignorant of facts the average American thinks an interruptible fuel source such as the sun and wind can compete with oil and natural gas. Does anyone remember the efficiency of energy being measured as the BTU factor? Wind and solar have low BTU factors.
