Just a question of curiousity.
I understand, from the intents of the Founding Fathers that this should be impossible due to dual loyalties, but is there anything stopping a natural born US citizen from becoming Prime Minister of Canada and then coming back and becoming President of the United States?
Boris Johnson renounced his US citizenship.
IIRC Johnson claimed to be renouncing his citizenship because of tax issues. Under US law a person’s *worldwide* income is subject to taxation by the IRS. Very few,if any, other countries have such a policy.
I pointed that out above.
You are correct.
Actually no, as neither parent was an American citizen when he was born. Furthermore, Boris was never recognized as a U.S. citizen. He was born on June 19th, 1964 in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, New York City, and his family moved back to England in Sept. of 1964. He has never applied to become a U.S. citizen either. Thus, he is not a citizen, let alone a natural born citizen.
Those familiar with the application of statutory construction would understand the 14th Amendment (birthright U.S. citizenship) is not the same as Art. II, §1, cl. 5 natural-born U.S. citizens.
A natural-born U.S. citizen requires both parents (sole jurisdiction) to be U.S. citizens at the time of birth of the child. In this respect, neither Obama nor Johnson were natural-born U.S. citizens. For that matter, neither Tulsi Gabbard, Nikki Haley, nor Vivek Ramaswamy are natural-born U.S. citizens. They are 14th Amendment (birthright) U.S. citizens.
From memory...
The Constitution has a permanent residency requirement for a President and Vice President.
Seventeen years - from memory.
Birth etc Constitution does not matter any more - When the time is right, the Dems will run Xi Jinping.
14 years permanent residency.
I just checked the text.
Natural Born = BOTH parents are citizens AND the individual born on home soil. Obama does not meet that standard.
Anything goes now since The Constitution is no longer being observed.
Remember that “We are the World” thingy?
I’m not talking about Obama. I’m just wondering if a child, who is born of two American citizens but becomes a leader of another country returns to America.
Can he run for President.
Winston Churchill could have been POTUS.....................
Fixed it.
He was born in England.
His mother was a US citizen.
Same as Obama................
Neat. I was not aware of that.
Kenya was part of the British Empire, so Maybe that only works for Black Americans.................
As neither parent was a diplomat, BoJo was a US citizen by birth. He renounced his US citizenship in 2017.
Technically he could be mislabeled as a U.S. citizen, due to the poorly written & incorrect interpretation of the 14th amendment. The intention of the 14th Amendment was not to make citizens of people who bore children while granted admission into the U.S. on a temporary basis to attend school or hold temporary employment. Nor was the intention for it to make citizens out of people who had entered the country illegally. For a fraudulent act invalidates all.
I contend that the parents of Boris had to officially request that their son Boris be recognized as a citizen of the U.S. to be designated as a citizen. In 1964, the interpretation 14th Amendment was not viewed as it later became to be viewed.
