WASHINGTON, Tuesday, May 19.

Gen. GRANT, under date of May 11, telegraphed to Gen. HALLECK as follows:

"My force will be this evening as far advanced along Fourteen-mile Creek, the left near Black River, and extending in a line nearly east and west, as they can get without bringing on a general engagement. I shall communicate with Grand Gulf no more, except it become necessary to send a train with a heavy escort. You may not hear from me again for several days."

Gen. GRANT also telegraphed Gen. HALLECK from Raymond, Miss., 14th, as follows:

"MCPHERSON took this place on the 12th inst., after a brisk fight of more than two hours. Our loss was 51 killed and 180 wounded. The enemy's loss was 75 killed, (burled by us,) and 186 prisoners captured, beside the wounded.

MCPHERSON is now at Clinton. Gen. SHERMAN is on the direct Jackson road, and Gen. MCCLERNAND is bringing up the rear. I will attack the State capital to-day."

The following is a telegram from Gen. HURLBUT, dated Memphis, and received here to-day:

"Gen. GRANT has taken Jackson. The capital is burned.

From five to ten thousand mounted men are concentrated near Okolona, threatening an advance in the direction of the Memphis Railroad.

A citizen, just up from Jackson, reports that the enemy abandoned Vicksburgh on Sunday, marching on the ridge northeast to Livingston, which is 20 miles northwest of Jackson."

WASHINGTON, Tuesday, May 19.

Additional information has been received this evening by the President, from Gen. HURLBURT, who has had dispatches from Gen. GRANT, confirming the evacuation of Vicksburgh. The entire rebel force were moving northward, to reinforce BRAGG, for the purpose of attacking ROSECRANS.

The dispatch says they will fail in this, as reinforcements will be thrown forward,

Wouldn't you call yesterday's Union assault on the Vicksburg defensive works a separate engagement? It involved Grant's entire force and cost them 1,000 casualties. If it had been successful the siege would have ended right there.

"Wouldn't you call yesterday's Union assault on the Vicksburg defensive works a separate engagement?"

I guess there were two initial assaults on Vicksburg, May 19 and again May 22, of which the second will be even more deadly for Union troops, producing 3,200 Union casualties, versus maybe 500 Confederate casualties.

Those are 2/3 of the casualties listed for the entire siege.
So I agree, will list the assaults separate from the siege itself.
