How to tell moving climate stories

Reports on the climate are proliferating, but can you really take them all in?

In Europe, where climate reporting is well established, many may feel there is an onslaught of bad news. Better to not read it, and be able to relax.

In response to this “climate news avoidance”, German psychologists have come up with recommendations for reporters, suggesting a more emotionally engaging approach.

First, they say, reporting should focus on how climate change impacts the most important aspects of society, such as health and the economy.

Second, it should acknowledge and validate readers’ feelings. Reporters should let the reader know that emotions arising from the content of the story are normal and widely shared. This acknowledgement, the psychologists report, can help people feel connected, encouraged to talk about their own experiences of climate change, and to deal constructively with their feelings.

Finally, reporting should consider the available solutions to the issues raised in a story, as readers are more likely to respond positively if they know others are doing the same. This might include highlighting the positive impacts of climate protection, international collaboration on climate action, or guidance on taking individual action.

The issue of people avoiding climate news altogether exists in China too. But a bigger problem there may be indifference to stories that people do read. So, how can reporters get their audiences to pay more attention to climate stories? Some of the suggestions in the report, especially those on how to have an emotional impact, are applicable in China.

Now they’re getting more scientific on how to spread their lies and get people to believe them.

My most moving climate story...we moved to south Florida when I was 11. My dad took us to a bridge over a bay to fish. It was a new bridge made of concrete. My day thought it would be a great idea if we scratched all our names in the new concrete and make a pointer to our new, best fishing hole. He even took a tool out to mark tide lines on the new seawall under the bridge. It’s been nearly 70 years but those memories are so fresh it could have been yesterday. The bridge looks old now but is still in good condition. The names we scratched into the bright, new concrete have faded some but are still there. Best of all the tide marks are still readable...and just as accurate as they were 70 years ago. The End.

Here’s a hint. If you have to sell your beliefs to people they’re not scientific and are probably lies.

i remember a hawaiian couple celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary, recreated a photo of them sitting on a beach rock that was still there and not under water...

hmmm, no sea level rise in 60 years... wow.

and photos of the shoreline from 100 years ago have not changed except for the number of hotels...

perhaps the islands are floating?

Great story!

Reminds me of my summers and long weekends as a kid at Big Silver Lake, where my Grandparents retired.

Over the course of the 50+ years we had that property, some summers there would be MILES of beachfront because the lake was low. Those were the best! Big bonfires on the beach, finding lots of formerly-underwater ‘treasures’ and easier to swim all the way across the lake and back! :)

Dad & Grandpa hated those years because there was SO MUCH PIER they had to lay out. ;)

Other summers the water would be so high that it came right to the bottom of our steps down to the lake. No beach that year. :( But Dad & Grandpa like those years; less pier to put up!

I don’t remember it being the same year to year, either.

So, ‘Science!’ or something, I guess. *SMIRK*
