Think Liza Minnelli and Joel Gray in Carberet. Think West Hollywood, Greenwich Village and Provincetown and the Castro, known as hotbeds of homosexuality.
But they are nothing like the uninhibited urban gay sexual scene and vast homosexual subculture that flourished in Berliin under Germany's Weimar Republic.
Sexual experimentation between the same sexes and medical advances of helping genders ‘trapped within the wrong body’ in Germany more than one hundred years ago shaped our understanding of gay identity today.
The city's liberal years - before the rise of Hitler - are detailed in a new book, Gay Berlin.
The science of ‘transsexuality’ was founded in Berlin at the Institute of Sexual Science where the first male-to-female surgery was performed. The words ‘homosexual’ or ‘transvestite’ were German innovations. Male prostitution, homosexual bars and nightclubs, cabarets populated by gay men, lesbians and transsexuals flourished in a wild, incomparable sexual subculture that was exciting yet dangerous.
It was in Berlin where scientists concluded that ‘same sex love was a natural, inborn characteristic and not merely the perversion of a ‘normal’ sexual tendency’, author and scholar Robert Beachy writes in his compelling book, Gay Berlin: Birthplace of a Modern Identity by Knopf Publishers.

Ironically, it appropriately describes the 1990s.
The 1990s was the Golden Age of indie filmmaking, which saw the release of many sexually "edgy" films, including many gay friendly films.
It was the decade when Seinfeld popularized the term, "Not that there's anything wrong with that!" -- signalling that "polite society" no longer tolerated "homophobic" comments.
And how it was dealt with by the Nazis.
BTTT
Against gender re-assignment surgery? = Hitler.
Ding ding ding. And we have a winner.
Yes, this will be the angle attempted yet if one researches and exposes the medical experiments in the camps, the same spirit of mutilation and destruction will be found.
Back in the 1920s you had Communist Antifa members rioting in the streets, beating up any who opposed them (sound familiar?). The liberal authorities refused to enforce the law. The middle class was afraid of communist revolution.
Finally a man emerged, a decorated war veteran who organized his own groups to fight the communists in the streets. The regular people cheered him and elected him to high office to fix the mess that Germany was descending into.
That man was named Adolf Hitler.
BTW. A lot of the “women” for sale in the windows...aren’t women.
Yes this about Berlin was well known. It is today reportedly seeing a substantial resurgence of the same hedonistic homosexual conduct
I personally am okay with letting adults do as they wish with their free will choices in life, so long as it is consensual of course.
I figure it’s none of my business
But they must be kept away from children!!
The author is an ignoramus. Cabaret WAS set in Weimar Republic Berlin.
This is not new information. Maybe it is for clueless people in the press.
It was too cosmopolitan in it's outlook and for the most part considered the Nazis, especially the Storm Troopers to be a bunch of rough necked louts and country bumpkins.
And there you have it. Support child mutilation or your on Team Hitler.
This bowl of Ramen was good until the Nazis came to power
No but they didn’t stop them either.
Very similar to today.
Some say Franco wasn't too ideological. A conservative authoritarian and a pragmatist, who united the anti-Communist factions -- Falangist, Carlist, Monarchist, etc. -- to fight the Reds.
It was only long after he was dead that it was safe to say you opposed him. I don't imagine Franco is well thought of Guernica.
Not much of a Big Reveal.
Didn’t everybody who knows anything about the period sort of know this already?
