World number seven Ons Jabeur said women players should not have to wait to receive the same prize money as their male counterparts at the Italian Open after tournament organisers announced plans to achieve pay parity by 2025.
Tennis has sought to be a leader in the battle for equality in the last couple of decades with equal prize money offered to men and women at the four Grand Slams. WTA Tour events, however, still often offer less prize money than those on the separate men's circuit. In the Rome tournament, the total "financial commitment" for the men is $9.51 million while for the women it is $3.5 million.
Italian tennis federation chief Angelo Binaghi said last month the event had started a process that would lead to equal prize money over three years, but Tunisian Jabeur called for immediate change. "I don't see why we have to wait," Jabeur told the New York Times. "It's really frustrating. It's time for change. It's time for the tournament to do better."

Since women’s sports are being taken over by men pretending to be women, the equal pay thing is no real change.
does equal pay amount to equal work?
Insane.
What do you mean golf? They have a PGA and LPGA, just like tennis.
Then force women to play best 3 of 5 sets like the men have to play; rather than 2 of 3 sets.
That.hasn’t happened in tennis since Renee Richards, who never achieved top level in the women’s game.
How about just having a tournament with no gender mentioned?
The main competition in big tine chess is open to men and women, but there’s also a womens’ category. The main events in tennis (and golf) should be open to both sexes. If women want the equal money they need to play against the best.

This is not the WNBA where viewership is single digits compared to the NBA.
Not really - it should come down to “do you bring in the viewership” - not the number of sets imho.
In Wimbledon and the US Opens, more people watch women’s tennis than men. So it doesn’t matter if they play one set or 5, it is the viewership.
As I said above, this isn’t the NBA or women’s soccer where the viewership doesn’t compare to men’s
Has anyone ever seen a job posting saying “Men:$50,000 Woman:$40,000”
This is a most enduring myth. Everyone gets paid the least they negotiate for.
No.
Women play a 3 set match in the majors, men play 5.
And women play at a much lower level of athleticism. They’re women, after all.
How does length of matches factor into viewership? Is a 3 set women’s match equal to a 5 set men’s match in terms of viewership?
Do longer matches bring in more ad revenue and does any of that go to the tournament organizers? I really don’t know how the money flows for tennis tournaments.
If you’re using the 2022 ratings for your US open stat, that was Williams’ last tourney.
I suspect that goosed ratings a bit.
And, even so, garnered a lousy number of eyeballs.
If you dont like the pay and the perks, find another job. No one is forcing you to play tennis.
