I dont think I have done a film review here, so let me catch up, huge film buff here. My long standing list of best films were as follows.
1&2 tied: Monty Python Holy Grail/Monty Python Life of Brian. 3:Aliens 4:5th Element 5:Rubber
I know thats an odd list, but they all have their certain appeal to me. That list changed recently when Clerks 3 came out. I am a massive Kevin Smith fan (yeah I know hes far to the left), but all of the weird crap that has happened to me in life, is almost as if he wrote the script to my crazy life. I served with a guy that got ghonneria in his tear duct, like I said, crazy life. Clerks 3 hit me hard because the series reflects my life, so it now holds top spot. Its also funny that my #4 pick 5th Element fell to #5 on my new list.
Anyways, back to the movie reviews. Recently a few films came out that I was looking forward to. Without giving away spoilers, here goes!
Dungeons and dragons: Had high hopes because I'm a nerd and thought Chris Pine did Kirk well, unfortunatly the whole film from scenes to dialog was predictable. Definetly a watch when a streaming service has it free.
John Wick 4: A total gun-fu action packed film. Not one single complaint, Reeves nailed it. Granted the action was over the top hollywood, but well worth the money on the big screen.
Super Mario Brothers:There is a reasion why its kicking tail, there is no woke bullpucky to get in the way of a fun adventure, Chris Pratt, Jack Black and the rest of the cast brought back a lot of nostalgia. As a gen-x'er there were subtle hints going all the way back to the Colecovision with Donky Kong Jr. Definatly a family film, great watch.
Lastly, Guardians of the Galaxy 3: PETA was up in arms about animal cruelty, I could tell they didnt watch the film. Once again Chris Pratt nailed it as Star-lord, my beef is simply with James Gunn, I will give him credit for his cinematography and soundtrack selection, but with him still being a child groomer in my eyes its a personal struggle for me. Kinda in the same light as Michael Jackson or Roman Polanski, did they produce good work? Yes. Are they good people, my opinion, no. Back to the film, GOTG3 did not end as I hoped it would, it ended 10 fold better than I could have hoped. Well worth the time, will give a small spoiler, Shes a Good dog!
I agree with your Monty Python choices, and I think Alien is kind of a classic. I saw Super Mario Brothers in 3D IMAX over the weekend and thought, “meh...”. I did nothing for me.
I watched the John Wick movies on Bitchute and found them somewhat entertaining. I just saw Point Break for the first time and remembered how terrible and overrated Reeves is as an actor, but he did improve a bit in the John Wick series. Still, not a great set of films, but somewhat entertaining enough to watch all the way through.
Rather than recent movies, I find it much more fun to go through YouTube and Bitchute and look for classics and forgotten movies that I remember from long ago or haven’t seen yet. There are thousands of them out there free for the viewing.
If anyone knows other good sources for documentaries, old movies, etc., a la Bitchute, please let me know which you find the best.
Thanks for posting your vanity. It’s good for a change to not get “Chetted” or “Medic’d” or “Uke’d”. ;)
Aliens, not Alien. Two different films, Aliens showed off military tactics used by the USMC at the time, proper room clearing, holding back the SAW, omly using supressive fire for a “tactical Retrograde”
No movies before 1970 make your list? Aliens certainly makes my worst of all time. Sigourney Weaver is bad enough. BALD Sigourney Weaver is intolerable. I view that one as the precursor of “the guys are all wimps and chicks all kick butt” genre. Dark and boring, too.
I keep wondering when Aliens will be canceled.
Here's Jenette Goldstein as she appeared in Aliens, and as she actually looks.
It looks like I confused “Aliens”, which I never saw, with “Alien 3”. I suspect this franchise is like the Jurassic Park series, or new items on the Taco Bell menu: same stuff, rearranged or changed portion sizes.
She appeared in both Alien and Aliens.
Both were good films.
Bladerunner has to be on the list.
Expand. You need room for Boondock Saints, The Searchers, The Thing from Outer Space and Beetlejuice.
I remember when Dennis Miller said he moved out of LA because it was starting to make the city from Bladerunner look like a Norman Rockwell painting.
Um, no.
5th Element and Beetlejuice were previously mentioned. Humor and suspense work well together, whether in a movie or a Mark Twain novel.
Going through Bruce Willis’ filmography, I noticed 12 Monkeys and Hart’s War.
I liked the 12 Monkeys movie. A TV remake was pretty terrible. Perhaps it was just preparing us to be hysterical during a pandemic.
Hart’s War seemed to be two movies in one. In the end, the Col, Bruce Willis, accepts punishment for the action of others. Willis’ performance was understated and effective.
Accepting punishment for the sins of others is associated with Jesus Christ. You seldom see anything like that in movies. It’s almost too foreign to make credible.
Lol, I love that!
I will admit that Reeves is a bit wooden in his dialog, similar to Clint Eastwood. However it fits the Wick character, just straight to the point.
I greatly enjoyed Aliens because of the military tactics. It was straight out of the USMC textbook at the time. Tactics gave changed for sure but it was accurate for CQC at the time.
Pretty much any Alien movie other than 1&2 was just a cash grab on the franchise, I have yet to watch Prey, so will not pass judgement on it.
Alien is a haunted house flick.
Aliens is an action flick.
Alien 3 is a passion play.
The rest are not worth mentioning.
Someone said aliens and she thought they said illegal aliens
