Many riders on this forum have stated the following, and it is worth repeating:
When you ride, do so as if you're INVISIBLE.
I've lost count of the number of times this mindset has saved my bacon.

Yes. A rider is invisible.
Also, always have a bail out plan.
Never trust other drivers.
If in doubt, back down and let the other vehicles have the road.

I use the invisible man routine when I’m driving anything, even my one ton pickup. Many drivers these days exist in an alternate reality called Oblivion.

Yep. Took a defensive driving course when I was 16. Instructor drilled it into us: Drive as if everyone else is out to get you, and always have a plan to avoid a collision. Requires active attention to driving/riding, but will keep you alive.
