My husband was an expert rider. Took all the latest safety classes, etc.
I used to tell him: I didn’t worry about him, I worried about the other drivers.
I know he had near-accidents that he never told me about.
The thing I find most discouraging is the increase in the number of Hit and Run accidents in the US. It seems more likely the other person will try to leave the scene, leaving you to die.
I realise that compared to the experts here, I am not qualified to really comment on this topic. But I was told by an old motorcyclist when I first started riding on the roads back in 1957 that there are really only two things to keep in mind when riding a motorcycle. They have served me well over the past 66 years.
1) EVERY motorcyle accident is Riders fault.
2) EVERY SOB, including your mother in a four wheeler is trying to kill you.

The obvious solution is to require more stringent testing and increased cost to obtain a motorcycle permit. It works so well in the gun control debate.

I knew a fellow truck driver that lost his wife in 2011(?) to a motorcycle accident. He was lead bike in left position with friends riding pack style in Iowa when a car crossed the centerline on a curve, just enough to side swipe him, and send him and his wife tumbling, and a couple other bikes behind him off the road trying to avoid them. Of course, being IA, they weren’t wearing helmets.
He lost his wife, and his left leg below the knee. The others were minor injuries I think.
Thats why I never rode in a pack, and if in a pair, the right bike led by at least a couple bike lengths. Never lead with the left bike, (except for making a left turn at an intersection). If it has to move right, there nothing in the way to do so.
As much as six bikes in the space of one tractor-trailer rig? That’s simply dangerous.
Had a friend in high-school who was a real maniac on wheels. Used to rip wheelies through town and such. Then one day we read the newspaper and he had gotten in an accident where his body went under a guardrail, and took his head completely off.
Bikes are great, but ya gotta respect em and their power, and also watch for other drivers all the time as they have a hard time judging the distance of someone on a bike, or being in a blind spot of the car or whatever. I slid my bike under the bumper of a truck once when he came to a sudden stop in front of me. Thankfully I didn’t hit his vehicle. It taught me to give plenty of room between vehiclex after that though.

Yep. I had a cousin killed by a hit and run driver. He was walking home one night, got clipped by a drunk driver, and the driver sped off. They did find him ,uckily thouhg when he turned himself in out of guilt.
True enough. A few years ago a fella drove his vehicle into a pack of bike riders- can’t remeber the details now, cant remeber if he did it deliberatly or not, but it was a major scene.
