The thing I find most discouraging is the increase in the number of Hit and Run accidents in the US. It seems more likely the other person will try to leave the scene, leaving you to die.

Yep. I had a cousin killed by a hit and run driver. He was walking home one night, got clipped by a drunk driver, and the driver sped off. They did find him ,uckily thouhg when he turned himself in out of guilt.

This happened to me...fortunately my injuries weren't life threatening, but I still have issues 14 years later.
