Cam Newton says his dreadlocks are a reason he is not on an NFL roster
Fox News ^ | 5/05/23 | Ryan Morik

Cam Newton is not his 2015 MVP self anymore, but the three-time Pro Bowler says there's another reason why he's still a free agent.

Over the years, Newton has grown out his hair for dreadlocks, and he suggests that's a reason why he remained unsigned throughout the 2022 season and is still looking for a job.

"It’s been hindered. And I’m not changin’," he said on Josina Anderson's "Undefined" podcast.

"People have hinted towards to say like, ‘Cam, we want you to go back to the 2015 clean-cut Cam. But that was a different me. Right now, where I’m at, it’s about embracing who I am."

The New England Patriots signed him during his dreadlocks phase, and he started 15 games for them in 2020. He returned to the Carolina Panthers in 2021 and played in eight games.

But before rejoining the team that selected him with the first pick in 2011, he said teams were insinuating he should have gotten a haircut.

"There was hints toward it," he said, via Bleacher Report. "And I gained a lot of great counsel from a lot of people. And the thing that is always mentioned is, 'Yo, Cam, you scarin' people the way you look.'

"And I would say, 'Yo, like I'm not gonna name names, but there's other quarterbacks that's in the league that don't look like me, but they got long hair. They don't scare them, do they?' So, we can go tit for tat, tat for tit with it. But I would just turn and nod to that and say, 'That's not the reason why I'm not in the NFL.'"

They change the rules often enough in the NFL to make the game barely recognizable to old people. In the name of geriatric justice, there should be rule changes to draw old viewers back to pro football. Defenses should be awarded two points and a free kick, for tackling any offensive player by the dreadlocks. Offensive players should be allowed to hold any defensive player by dreadlocks. That might just get me to watch pro football again.

too bad he’s not correct in his accusations. Even the other day Vogelbsch of the Mets looked hideous with his cornroles.

Silver lining to this. He is standing up for what he believes in (dreadlocks) even though it comes at a significant personal cost (no job).

A lot of politicians could learn from his example - especialy the part about no job.

How much does an NFL quarterback make? What $10 million a year? If this was even remote true, and he still did not cut his dreadlocks, than he is even a bigger idiot that I thought he was.

Cam Newton may have suffered too many concussions so he fears CTE in his future. Take away his running game, he’s useless as a QB. That’s what happened after that Super Bowl. I think he’s shell shocked and he’s never the same after that.

I have the opposite problem. I’m not on an NFL roster because I’m bald. The fact that I’m old, slow, can’t throw or jump has nothing to do with this blatant discrimination.

Excellent analogy! I'm still laughing.

Glad I could give you a chuckle. I often debated the "Diversity is our strength" bs with HR types. I shoot 85% from the foul line. 60% from 14-18 feet. But I can't jump or play defense. I would add diversity to the NY Knicks, but I wouldn't improve the team.

I disagree, I believe he was coached to protect himself, risk avoidance. And he did that.

But when you’re in the game of the year, it’s all out. I absolutely believe that if Tom Brady was in that situation he would not have hesitated to dive headfirst into that pile.

So bad coaching, but Cam takes the blame.

Cam is and always was a schoolyard QB, like Krappernick. When he was a step quicker than everyone else he was able to make it work. No longer.

Of course this notorious fact and its effect was known to all when the Memorandum was executed. Ukraine sought a higher level document was but was refused.

The document was BS but at the same time, Ukraine was able to receive support from USA and UK like they promised to do.
