My wife was working on her computer today and a Google.com photo of the front of our house popped up on her screen. Google had blurred out the American flag that was flying on the front of our house! Why would they do that?
“would they be actually looking at every single house in my city to see what needed to be blotted out?”
Their automated photo processing already blurs faces and license plates. It wouldn’t be hard to do flags.
Maybe the algorithm mistook your flag for a license plate? (long shot).
I mentioned in another reply that I found LOTS of flags in front of houses in and around Coeur d’Alene, ID.
“I’ve seen gun store signs blurred out in the Google Street View. I don’t think it’s the name of the store that trips the algorithm, but if the sign has a gun on it.”
I am looking at a Google Maps street-side view of my local gun shop and nothing is blurred out including the four American flags.
I wonder if it’s by ZIP code where people complain it’s offensive.
I consider myself lucky - my 7 year old house is still a vacant lot on g∞gle street vw. Slightly older houses a few doors away are shown.
Curiously, there's one house down the street that's totally blurred out (the whole house) in all views. I suppose that's something a person can have g∞gle do if wanted.
Wow that’s kind of weird. Mine was just redone last month, I could tell by the picture, then finally saw in the corner where they said April 2023. It’s all really random, mostly just useful for spotting landmarks before where you’re going.
It’s the image stitching software they use blurs the edges of the photos into one continues panorama. They didn’t intentionally blur your flag.
They are probably obscuring something else. I checked a friend’s house that has all sorts of US flags and bunting on it and everything looks great!
Some flags are more equal than other flags.
Is it an American flag?
Maybe, but they blur out people’s faces and lots of stuff especially in residential areas.
Our house was Google photo-ed over 9 years ago. We were having the driveway re-done and the trucks & workers are still there today! They did blur the faces & license plates, but the truck logo & company phone number is clear.
Because Gargoyle is the spawn of Satan?
No, the flag is the only part of the photo that is blurred. It is an area just to the side of the entrance.. The license plate of my card is blurred out though. Just a very small area.
I just checked my house on google. It’s a very old picture but the flag is flying high.
If you were using Google Maps or one of those apps based on that data, the pictures were likely taken a number of years ago; don’t know if that’s the case, but don’t assume a photo is present day
Goo ... what, you’re still using them?
That’s because they thought you were thanking your lawn care guy from Guatemala.
DOJ ordered it done.
If you are referring to Google Maps/Street View use the on-screen arrows to move back and forth on the street...I have noticed random blurs that come and go based on position.
Here is an example of some blurs that disappear when you move down the street:

Random blur on this garage...with the U.S. and Marine Corp flags left untouched:

Shifting the view to different angles does not change it.
