Folk singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot, a Canadian icon who Bob Dylan once referred to as a "rare talent," passed away in Toronto on Monday. Lightfoot was 84 years old. Representative Victoria Lord confirmed that Lightfoot died at a Toronto hospital early Tuesday morning, but did not elaborate on his cause of death. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was quick to offer tribute to the musician on Twitter.

“Sundown” , a great song. You hear his songs and your mind is back in the 70’s, reliving the old days and old girl friends.
The greatness of the Wreck song I believe is it serves as a parable for life itself.
So up North there are these storms that come late summer that will wisen or kill a mariner. One day it’s sunny, warm, upper 70s, light wind. The next day begins a horrific storm with hurricane force winds, short period waves, sleet and snow.
Don’t take life for granted. Do what’s proper. If the captain says batten the hatches don’t get lazy or skimp. Decisions matter because life matters. People who don’t realize this deserve to suffer. Even if it’s only thru the song’s endless playing.
Btw, that song lost the song-of-the-year Grammy to Barry Manilow’s, “I Write the Songs.” Can you believe it?
The irony is that Barry Manilow didn’t write it, it was Bruce Johnston of the Beach Boys who wrote it.
Wow. Another towering talent.
I'll have to side with your wife on this. That song just seems to drone on and on and on.
I have many Lightfoot albums & was always partial to his other shipwreck song—The Ballad of the Yarmouth Castle.

Lightfoot is, always will be, among the giants of the singer-songwriters. I was raised on rock and roll— the hooks, the riffs, the wild stage antics grab the attention for a minute,, but the poets are the ones who have stayed with me 50 years— Lightfoot, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon. I have dozens of their albums, never tire of listening to them.
I’ll be listening to Gordon Lightfoot tonight, with a glass of wine by the fireplace.
Oh boy. Screen all blurry.
The combination of his voice, guitar, and lyrics could be mesmerizing. An amazing talent.
Peach
Hopefully he is on that carefree highway. RIP Gordon Lightfoot.
Better get to it....
I love all of his songs, but my favorite is “Song for a Winter’s Night.”
That’s sad. What a great talent he was. There’s something so beautifully melancholy about the lyrics to “If You Could Read Your Mind”.
Finally, we also have a Lightfoot in the news for having contributed positively to society.
RIP. A real troubadour.
Big 707 set to go.
When ever I hear that verse Im always reminded of riding out a typhoon off the coast of Viet Nam aboard Vancouver LPD 2.
The most scared I have ever been. I got a broken leg out of the deal. It felt like we were gonna capsize.
I have never experiencded anytrhing like that, but always felt that song lyric was incredible, exceptionally descriptive, and really got the feeling across.
Sundown and Carefree Highway are like a Time Machine when I hear them but Early Morning Rain is Teleportation.
One of the best to come along in our lifetimes.
That was really funny!!!!
