MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Medicaid will soon cover the cost of diapers for the first two years of a child’s life in Tennessee.
“The cost of diapers is outrageous,” said Linda Buckingham as she held her 1-year-old niece. “It’s ridiculous, really.”
“It will help my mom a lot,” said Treazon Ali. “It will help my sister a lot.”
Tennessee will become the first state to cover diapers under Medicaid, according to the National Diaper Banks Network.
“That is so cool,” said Machelle Jackson, a 10-year-old shopping with her mom. “I feel like it's cool for the parents that really don't have the money to buy Pampers for their kids.”
Local diaper banks are still waiting on guidance to learn how they can serve Medicaid families with this new funding.
“Diapers can be really expensive!” said Dornesha White, the manager of the Bare Needs Food Bank, which is part of the Mid-South Food Bank. “This will provide extra funding for those parents that are struggling, especially when their bills are piling up and they just don’t know where to get diapers from.”
White said the average baby uses between $70-$100 worth of diapers a month.
Conanissa Hollis wishes this extra support had been available when she was raising her four children.
“It got hard sometimes,” she said. “But we made it.”

Just WOW
Fathers still optional
People who cannot afford diapers should refrain from having children.
But better pay that than have socialized diapers I suppose...
If they are provided diapers at all, they should be reusable ones.
Cloth diapers & snap-on rubber pants.
Not as bad as how I read it,”Teen care.” I was wondering what the hell with teens still pooping? My bad:>)
Cloth diapers are very cheap only if you have your own washer. Laundromat costs make it a wash.
I had three under 3 in cloth diapers and if I had to tote them and their diapers to the laundromat, I’d have switched to disposables.
Maybe use cotton diaper, wash by hand and reuse. Takes a little work but saves money?
Don’t laugh - most of you will be helping cover the cost too.
The JoeTatoe is moving to Tennessee, BUTT PRONTO!!
People don't understand what's going on in a lot of the states.
Many of the Republicans at the state level now understand that they will ALWAYS have their seats in the safe Red counties [vote for the lesser of Two Weasels!!], and all they have to do is a Kabuki dance, pretending to "fight" the Democrat minority who they've ceded power to.
Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Colorado.
I believe you about Tennessee.
When I was out of work, my wife went to cloth temporarily. You do what you have to do.
I imagine now a booming black market for discount diapers in Kentucky and Georgia.
Before my oldest son was born (1973). K-Mart had Pampers, box of 30 on sale for 88¢. limit two per customer. We went in separately, numerous times.
Its happened to higher education. Its happened to health care.
Walmart.com with free delivery.
How about having children when you can afford children?
