Good conservatives sucked in by old disinformation on Joe McCarthy
American Thinker ^ | 25 Apr, 2023 | John Dale Dunn

The anti-McCarthy campaign was and always will continue to be the disinformation strategy that continued past the McCarthy times.

I read Roger Kimball's essay in Epoch Times applauding an exhaustive, insightful study on the disinformation project of the left by Jacob Siegel in Tablet. My respect for Kimball at Epoch Times and many other sources, as well as my previous great experiences with Tablet commentaries prompted me to review both essays and in many ways both Kimball and Siegel did not disappoint. They were comprehensive in their warnings about disinformation and propaganda dressed up to influence the populace, its effects on political discourse, culture, even elections.

However it was hard for me to ignore that conservative Mr. Kimball, who sports a double degree in philosophy from Yale and Siegel, also conservative, who is not so academically endowed but is an experienced and accomplished internet journalist, both were victims of a major early1950s disinformation project like those that they both condemned so eloquently. Both Siegel and Kimball are dupes for the comprehensive and intense disinformation campaign to discredit an anticommunist Senator Joe McCarthy, a WWII air force vet who was the US senator from Wisconsin from 1947 until his death in 1957.

The energetically vicious attack of McCarthy, in my opinion and the opinion of others, was cover for the communist/comintern infiltration and invasion of America effort that began in the 1920s and continued to the time of Joe McCarthy but continues to the present. Maybe if the disinformation project to destroy McCarthy had been less successful, Joe McCarthy and others would have had better success stopping the commie invasion. Do you think?

Mr. Kimball and Mr. Siegel, along with so many others, are proof positive that an intelligent person can be a victim of a disinformation campaign concocted by professional...

The release of the Verona Papers showed that McCarthy has largely correct in his accusations against communists in the US. It also showed that the problem was much greater than he realized. For example FDR (under his codename “Captain”) was named in the papers. The disinformation campaign continues by communists in the US to this day.

It always amazes me how my fellow conservatives can be so good at recognizing fake news when they hear it, but yet completely fail to recognize fake history.

I always say this to anyone who will listen: The fake news of yesterday becomes the fake history of today. If the powers to be will lie about what is happening right now, why would they put the truth in history books?

For example, every once in a while, I question the truth of some bit of conventional Civil War history, based on the fact that I have a Confederate ancestor who passed down some non-conforming perspectives.

But the same conservative friends and FReepers who rightfully distrust every single word uttered by the MSM, will defend every word printed in a history book, and treat any doubters as heretics.

Now, I don’t claim to know what parts of recorded history are true and not true - but isn’t it pretty safe to assume “history” is full of lies?

Those wanting to read a good full corrective historical study should grab Blacklisted by History, by M. Stanton Evans. It cleans up the giant disinformation campaign and does a good study of the whole era and how the leftists tried to cover up the damage they did.

I always meant to go back and dig into the McCarthy era and never did.

I think a lot of people knew intuitively that there was a communist conspiracy, but it seems that even back then the left was very good shaping the narrative.

I suspect that his endeavors were in hind-sight an all-or-nothing proposition, or should have been. IE: Win, or don’t do it. Him being unable to successfully reveal and uproot the depths of the communist infiltration of Hollywood, media, the education system, and government probably did more harm than good because they used him as a lightening rod in politics to vilify others by association and push weaker conservatives into disavowing.

Now we are stuck with the krypto marxists running our media and universities and well entrenched throughout the deep state and even though a lot of time has passed, they haven’t quite yet been able to pull off the overt coup d’etat. But I fear we are getting closer.

One of the commenters to the linked article gets it right about the biggest misconception. The Black List wasn't Tail Gunner Joe's, it was the bipartisan House Un-American Activities Committee's. There was a fairly even mix of Republicans and Dims on the committee, and chairmanship waffled back and forth from a Republican to a Dim.

But today's hoopleheads are too history-ignorant and fall for the LIE that "McCarthyism" was 1) wrong-headed, and 2) all the republican's fault.

"...[I]sn’t it pretty safe to assume “history” is full of lies?"

A similar sentiment has been attributed to many famous types (Napoleon in particular) but the original (probably) came from Bernard Le Bovier de Fontenelle in 1728 in L'Origine des Fables....

"[T]here are no ancient histories other than these fables."*
... often recounted as, "History is a lie agreed upon."

* Originally, "[I]l n'y a point d'autres Histoires anciennes que les Fables."

“History is written by the victors.”

Until I witnessed what happened the days following November 3, 2020, I would have agreed with that generalization.

Now, I would add; History is written by those who possess the power to control what version of history is written. Usually, that would be the victors. In the case of stolen elections, history will be written by the ones that lost the election, and the ones that won will rot in prison if they dare to question what is written.

There is a book written by McCarthy’s son that lays it all out. There are too many commies in this country that “hate” it, but will not leave. Most of them are in DC/NYC/Boston.

It always amazes me how my fellow conservatives can be so good at recognizing fake news when they hear it, but yet completely fail to recognize fake history.

I'm there with you. I found out a lot of things I was taught to believe are misleading and/or incorrect.

I always say this to anyone who will listen: The fake news of yesterday becomes the fake history of today. If the powers to be will lie about what is happening right now, why would they put the truth in history books?

The corrupt deep state cabal wants history to look a certain way because that helps preserve their power.

For example, every once in a while, I question the truth of some bit of conventional Civil War history, based on the fact that I have a Confederate ancestor who passed down some non-conforming perspectives.

It was learning some things I didn't know about the Civil War that caused me to realize much of our history is just lies.

But the same conservative friends and FReepers who rightfully distrust every single word uttered by the MSM, will defend every word printed in a history book, and treat any doubters as heretics.

I try to get people to see this all the time, and while they are willing to admit there is a lot of lying going on now they absolutely refuse to believe there was any lying going on during the Lincoln years. The government was saintly and sacred back then.

Now, I don’t claim to know what parts of recorded history are true and not true - but isn’t it pretty safe to assume “history” is full of lies?

Especially when you find out things like the war was *NOT* about slavery, it was about economic power in the Northeast, and that the Confederates didn't attack first, Lincoln did. There was no "expansion" of slavery, that was just a lie.

Pretty much all the things people think they know about the Civil War are just lies the governing powers told us.

Not son...maybe it was his son-in-law because he had a daughter. Anyway, the preface of the book stated that no one was in any way injured as a result of McCarthy exposing the commies. McCarthy died at age 48.

Yep, to the victors go the spoils.

...with one caveat, the good guys(victors) aren't always the good guys, the bad guys(losers) aren't always the bad guys.

Just out of sheer curiosity, what were some of his perspectives ? I'd like to see if they jibe with some of what I've gleaned over the years.
