IMHO the feminization of superheroes (e.g. Captain Marvel played by a female) hurt the series. The main reason the Black Widow character did so well was how Scarlett filled out her uniform:

I liked Gwyneth and Scarlett in those idiotic movies. Neither one of them are great actresses but you get used to seeing them up there on the screen.

Captain Marvel was literally a plot device. I give Marvel credit for getting folks to shelll our cash to go see a movie about the back story of a plot device.
The character is just one dimensional both on screen and in the comics.
