Yazz Giraldo, a mother of two who is of Middle Eastern and Latin descent, is “traumatized” by the incident and believes she was racially targeted because she and her husband, Ali Moghaddam, were speaking Farsi to their toddlers.
The drama unfolded as the family was flying from Fort Lauderdale to New York in September for a Long Island wedding. Both kids urgently needed the restroom, recalled Giraldo, who tried to take the baby to the first-class bathroom closest to their seats at the front of the plane.
“Everybody else was using it,” she said, but one flight attendant barred her without explanation from doing the same.

A second flight attendant there told her there was no prohibition on using the closer bathroom so she took her son to that lavatory, according to a Brooklyn Federal Court discrimination lawsuit she filed against American Airlines.
The flight attendant who barred her from first class tried to stop her — even as the desperate child “was holding himself, he was about to lose it,” Giraldo said.
“I closed the door, when I’m inside the bathroom I start hearing the noise, ‘tick, tick, tick,'” she said of the sound of the door locking. “I freaked out. I was already under so much stress. … I started to panic, I banged on the door a few times and I said, ‘Let me out of here.'”

A few minutes later, a supervisor loudly berated her in front of other passengers, claiming “the pilot decided to put the plane under terrorist attack warning because of you.”
When Giraldo, whose baby was sleeping on her chest, tried to explain she’d been misled about the bathroom and locked inside, the screaming attendant accused her of lying.

“Everybody else was using it,”
Well, that’s a lie right there because I WASN’T USING IT.
Maybe she screamed “Jihad”?
As uniformed military (past) I’ve been upgraded to First Class, and the best was being upgraded to the cockpit.
FBI are a bunch of domestic terrorists. I only wish the worst for these subhuman thugs and their families.
[Can't believe this is the first "Airplane" comment.]
Locked them in?
Really?
Next time I degrade myself by flying in an airliner, I’ll have to look and see if they can be locked from the outside.
No kidding
No kidding
No kidding
I wonder what these young snowflakes think when they watch older movies.
Used to be people who wanted to be Americans spoke English — and only English — in the home.
I knew many first generation Americans my age (children of recent immigrants) who spoke nothing but English. Which is how it should be.
Anytime I fly first class everybody uses the first class bathroom, no questions asked.
Funny to read all these comments:
1. If this happened anywhere close to what she says happened, heads need to roll.
2. Flight attendants aren’t always the best people. The good old days where airlines were selective are long gone.
3. In this country, hearing foreign languages anywhere shouldn’t be a shocker. Seen anything in writing lately NOT in English and Spanish?
4. First Class bathrooms are often open to all passengers, particularly crowded flights. You people don’t fly often, do you?
5. I see that the frequent anti-small-kids element is present in force. Kids usually don’t give a lot of warning when the urge to go becomes overwhelming. If you can’t understand that and have patience, I pity you.
6. Blaming her for her husband’s former FBI service is a pretty long reach isn’t it - even for the Tin Hat brigade?
7. Look at her photo - Not Guilty!
Sounds like my friend’s family who emigrated from Belgium decades ago. Parents mandated that the children ONLY speak English, and were punished if they didn’t.
No, it would be a major safety violation and I can't envision a situation where it would be useful or necessary.
You don’t use the First Class bathroom.
Period.
The woman probably ignored the flight attendant.
Play stupid games.
Story stinks…literally
Now she’s playing the muslim card
I haven’t flown for a while but all of the planes I flew on were able to be locked from the outside - there was a thing that would show green for open and red for occupied. When you locked it from the outside, it would show red and occupied so people knew it was either occupied or unusable. So, in my opinion from when I flew for the airlines...
Not necessarily; I flew a coach flight from Pittsburgh to Las Vegas a number of years back and had to go ask the FA a question - she smiled, answered my question and I went back to my seat.
Agree with all your points except that one. Last two or three years it's been made pretty clear that the First Class lavs are NOT open to us in Sardine Class.
That's good to hear. I used to fly alot and first class a lot before covid and it was a huge pain having a bunch of "sardines" standing in the aisle waiting to use the 1st class lav.
