NATIONAL CRAWFISH DAY
National Crawfish Day on April 17th celebrates one of the South’s most iconic foods. Each year the mudbug brings out not only a desire for newspaper-covered picnic tables but a language all its own.
#NationalCrawfishDay
A smaller, fresh-water cousin to the lobster, crawfish provide a unique flavor to many homegrown Southern dishes. Baked or boiled, crawfish is usually seasoned with a distinctive brand of southern heat. One particularly popular way to serve crawfish is a boil, paper towels required.
If you’ve never been to a crawfish boil, you don’t understand the meaning of digging into your food. An unbridled desire overcomes you as the aroma hits you to devour a massive pile of corn, potatoes, and sausage. And let’s not forget a variety of shellfish that go by names such as ditchbug, crayfish, crawdad, crawpappy, among other amusements.

Mudbugs. Need to get out and catch some for the turtle.
Used to catch them as a kid growing up in rural Mississippi!.....................
We called them crawdads when I was a kid.
So did we...................
Along with oysters.......I wonder who the 1st lunatic was that thought “ya know, I bet that’d be good eatin’!” 😁
“Well Jambalaya and a crawfish pie and a filet gumbo..”
Monkey see, monkey do......................
Sand can be quite filling...........................
Pinch the tail. Suck the head.
Best version of that song I’ve ever heard! Bet the gents around here appreciate it even more than I do.
We’ve got to call them crawfish now — the term crawdad is cisgendered bigotry. /rimshot
About 20 years ago I was at a Seafood Festival (which I paid to get in) at Key Marathon when suddenly one of the organizers started yelling for all vendors to take down their tents and pack up IMMEDIATELY because they had a report of very strong winds moving from the lower Keys north.
Well, in the midst of the mayhem, my food deal skills kicked in and I went to the vendor tent where they were selling Golden Crab. I don't know if you've ever eaten Golden Crab but they get them via net several thousand feet deep. They aren't Golden until after they are cooked but they are about the BEST crab I have ever eaten.
So in the middle of them packing up I asked how much I could get at the closing out discount. Someone filled up a big box with Golden Crabs and charged me only $10. Just as I started pulling out of the festival parking lot the winds hit with a lot more force than expected. Any remaining tents were quickly torn down and carried away with the wind.
Anyway, a few hours later it was evening when I got home looking forward to eating those Golden Crabs. Knowing how messy that can get with the butter, I stripped down bare nekkid and devoured them while watching a TV movie about Rudy Giuliani (favorable since back then the media still considered Giuliani the hero of 9/11). But my biggest memory is how INCREDIBLE those Golden Crabs were which would have cost $100 at the normal rate but were discounted due to the severe weather situation.
