It’s the first trove of artifacts identified from a sanctuary in the ancient Greek city of Paestum, which dates from the 5th century B.C. Paestum, famed for its three massive Doric-columned temples, is near the archaeological site of Pompeii, but farther down the Almalfi coast.

The small temple was first identified in 2019 along the ancient city walls but excavations were halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Italian Culture Ministry said in a statement.

Excavations yielded several small terracotta figurines in the first months of resuming work, the Ministry said.

Archeologists found seven bull heads found around a temple altar as if placed there on the ground in a form of devotion.

They wanted to call it that but Sophia Lauren objected.

The Roman Navy was training dolphins to ram enemy ships to knock off their rudders.
Any 3rd grader riding a dolphin can figure this one out.

Quibbles, "Archaeologists", not "Archeologists", and "Amalfi" not "Almalfi".

This is about a 5th c BC Greek colony in Italy, not Rome. Rome was founded about 500 BC, and the Roman navy never tried to train dolphins.

When I saw the photo of the boy on a dolphin, it brought memories back of the 1957 movie with Alan Ladd, Clifton Webb, and Sophia Loren titled “Boy on a Dolphin.”

She was always one of my favorite actresses, and when they cast Liz Taylor as Cleopatra, I felt that Sophia Loren would have been a much better choice.

ok I found this ...
“Periandros, the man who informed Thrasyboulos of the oracle, was the son of Kypsclos, the tyrant of Corinth. The Corinthians tell a story, and the people of Lesbos agree with them, about the most amazing thing that happened during his lifetime: Arion of Methymna was carried upon a dolphin and set on shore at Tainaron.”...ff “there is a dedication by Arion at Tainaron, of a small bronze statue of a man upon a dolphin.”
source: Herodotus, “Histories”, “Book one”, 598-ff, lines 23.25; footnote 24b = Pausanias said he saw the statue six centuries later.
[I have to go back and read the original langauge and also look for more clues=] I yam havin lotsa fun!]

I still watch it from time to time on disk, love the look of the thing, and find some of it amusing, but it’s a massive failure. Thanks to the way movies were shown back then, the studio managed to start making money after a mere four years or something.

Joan Collins did a screen test for the role, Liz was a better choice than that, I think Sophia Loren was one of the actresses under consideration.
