According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney has tapped Sydney Agudong to play Nani Pelekai in Disney's upcoming live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch.
The article states that Sydney was "born and raised on the island of Kauai, Hawaii" and doesn't mention if she is Native Hawaiian.
The casting choice sparked immediate backlash across social media. Here's why: Pacific Islanders have notoriously little representation in Hollywood. And the majority of PI celebs who do find fame in the US are light-skinned — despite many, many islanders coming in a range of darker skin tones.

Please.
Lilo and Stitch was a cute movie about family that does not need a live action remake or any remake.
Just stop.
For a great many people everything is all about skin color.
I worked 5 hours of overtime today, picked up some new hiking shoes, then went to Maybury State Park and walked the trails for two hours. Not once during that time did I think of Disney live action remakes, beer companies sponsoring crazy people, or anything to do with President Houseplant, Donald Trump, or Ron Desantis. It was actually a pretty good day.
Who is “the internet”?
Surely not the handful of loons who care about this.
“the internet is outraged”
All of the internet ? Every single person is outraged ?
Either way...Disney remakes of their beloved animated films is just stupid. There is more talent put into those films than any film Disney has put out in 20 years.
The story happens in modern-day Hawaii. I would say that most Hawaiians are Polynesian/European mix by now.
Funny, these very same people are not at all the same about their presents. Much more concerned about the present inside, than the wrapping paper. Such hypocrisy.
The media has managed to make a lot of weak-minded people obsessed with skin color.
I believe they’ve given formerly well-adjusted people inferiority complexes with their nonstop crap.
Why do I think that if they made a movie about George Washington, and the actor they chose had a darker swath of skin color than what the average Caucasian would think reasonable, no one (no one in the media/entertainment sphere) would give a red rodents red derriere over it. (Hamilton, cough, cough)...
Woke Disney not dark skinned enough.
All 4.3 billion IP addresses.
Damn...they are mad
Danton is never good enough for Robespierre.
Hawaiian natives are a-holes, ignore their complaints.
Fine with me, as long as ALL remakes cast actors of the same race/sex as the original character.
The Arabian characters in the live action remake of Aladdin were brown-skinned. That was realistic for the setting.
Not guilty.
“The Internet Is Outraged”
That always cracks me up. Has anybody ever seen an Outraged Internet? We get some lively discussions on FR, especially about mRNA and Ukraine, but that’s the closest I’ve seen to an “Outraged Internet.”
I suspect “Outraged Internet” is a bunch of bots that get amplified to look like millions of people.
Honestly, who cares if the “Internet is OUTRAGED”? What can the Internet do to you?
