X-ray research leads to surprise find - zinc affects the stability of cells in superbug and removing it kills them, writes Dr Miriam Stoppard
You might remember zinc best as zinc oxide, the thick white cream slathered on babies with nappy rash and used for burns, cuts and scrapes. It’s a good barrier cream to protect the skin.
But internally, zinc serves useful functions too – one of which is helping the production of healthy sperm. That’s because it promotes cell growth and multiplication, and supports the immune system.
Now, exciting research from Warwick University is pointing the way to its use against superbugs – bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics.
Acinetobacter baumannii (AB) is one of those and it can cause infections in the blood, urinary tract and lungs, or in wounds in other parts of the body.
It’s a particular problem in hospitals. Some patients can carry AB without any symptoms while in others the bacterium causes serious illness, and can even lead to death.
Unfortunately, many AB infections are resistant to antibiotics, making them difficult to treat.
But the Warwick research has found that zinc plays a key role in how AB cells form their shape and identifies this process as a new target for overcoming resistant infections.
Dr Carmina Micelli, who collaborated with researchers from Northwestern and Tufts Universities in the US, noticed the importance of zinc when she was studying a group of enzymes known as penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which control the shape of AB bacteria cells.
exciting as a whodunnit.
She said: “I was using X-ray crystallography to study PBPs when I noticed a single zinc ion in a particular structural part of PBP2. I knew this hadn’t been discovered before.
“When zinc was removed, the stability of PBP2 was reduced and resulted in

I assume one needs quercetin or hydroxychloroquine to push the zinc into the cells.
“Hospital Superbugs Can Be Brought Under Control by a Surprise Weapon – Zinc”
Yeah great but is this really a surprise? Hasn’t the medicinal benefits of zinc been known for years?
Thanx nick.
Zinc can’t deworm horses.
First, someone needs to reposition an electron, neutron or proton in the element, or add something else to make it a zinc-compound, so they can patent it. Then it needs 12 years of randomized trials to prove the patented new mineral/mineral compound works. Then they make billions.
I’ve heard that tobacco can.
Surprise to whom?
Sheep.
Prince Albert?
“you know, those conspiracy theory supplements the experts told you would kill you if you took it for covid instead of their jab.”
Funny. Here’s a March 2020 PubMed study mentioning Hydroxychloroquine as possibly effective against Covid. This was long before the conspiracy theorists began claiming that it was being hidden from them.

” Interest has arisen also on the ‘old’, off-patent antimalarial drug chloroquine and its less toxic hydroxychloroquine analog, both of which are quinine derivatives (cinchoca tree bark, South America). Preliminary support from observations of potential inhibitory activity against SARS-CoV-2 (105,106), clearly needs to be confirmed through randomized controlled trials.”
And another from February 2020

“The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) virus is spreading rapidly, and scientists are endeavoring to discover drugs for its efficacious treatment in China. Chloroquine phosphate, an old drug for treatment of malaria, is shown to have apparent efficacy and acceptable safety against COVID-19 associated pneumonia in multicenter clinical trials conducted in China.”

Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine as available weapons to fight COVID-19
I remember my cousin feeding his horse cigarettes. I don’t know if he had a brand preference.
Yet Doctors got cancelled for prescribing those, and Phamacies were ordered not to honor certain prescriptions...
It was never about our health.
Zinc, immediately move to be prescription only, and forbidden for anyone to get a prescription.
“It was never about our health.”
Yeah that’s a favorite conspiracy story.
The early CQ/HCQ successes against SARS were in vitro tests done on Green Monkey kidney tissue. I posted a link to one of those studies here back in March 2020, it was from 2005.
The first opportunity to test HCQ on live humans arrived with Covid and what worked in the lab on Vero e6 cells didn’t work on people.
On PubMed I saw studies like Vietnam giving their nurses HCQ in the hope that it would keep them from catching Covid, and they caught it at the same rate as without HCQ. The papers weren’t hard to find.
But you don’t need a prescription drug to get a zinc ionophore anyway. Quercetin is found in onions, EGCG in green tea. And both are available as OTC supplements. Take those with zinc tablets.

Oh, is it legal again to talk about ways zinc can support some good results in sick people?
