Father used cattle prod on his children multiple times ‘for discipline’: Deputies
Law & Crime ^ | April 5, 2023 | Jerry Lambe

A Kentucky man is accused of using a cattle prod on his own children. Deputies said he did it to “discipline” them, but now defendant Anthony L. Jones, 32, faces four counts of criminal abuse in the third degree of a child 12 or under, and one count of criminal abuse in the third degree.

“The perpetrator used an electric cattle prod multiple times on his two children for discipline,” deputies wrote in documents. “Both children were given a forensic interview at the CVAC center and both confirmed this. The perp used the cattle prod to shock the victims and threatened them with it on several occasions.”

Jones was arrested on Friday at approximately 10:15 a.m.

“The arrest occurred off Littontown Road, approximately 4 miles north of London following an investigation conducted by Deputy Poynter,” the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office said on Facebook. “Following an earlier investigation while assisting DCBS, Deputy Poynter obtained two complaint warrants of arrest. The first complaint warrant of arrest charged four counts of criminal abuse – third-degree – child 12 or under. Allegedly, the accused used an electric cattle prod multiple times on two children for discipline. The second complaint warrant of arrest charged one count of criminal abuse – third-degree.”

Jones was booked into the Laurel County Correctional Center. He pleaded not guilty at an arraignment on Monday, and he is scheduled for a pretrial conference to take place May 2. He has no attorney of record.

My Dad playfully zapped me with one once, plus I got the electric fence accidentally a couple times curry-combing my horse. Not a big deal, but I wasn’t 12 either.

Not so the neighbor boy, when I challenged him to pee on the electric fence.
His Dad came after me.🤣

I don’t condone it for punishment, however. That is wrong.

"After getting hit by 450VAC on a Destroyer ..."

After high school, I worked for a few summers in the maintenance dept at a local school. Supervisor was a former merchant marine.

Told us that ships ran a lot of DC devices and shocks from that would throw you across the room if you were lucky, and you wouldn't be able to let go if you weren't.

Don't know if that's true, and I've never been exposed to high voltage or high current DC to find out for myself.

120vac doesn't bother me all that much, although it definitely gets my attention. I only had to experience 240vac once to be more careful. Anything above that and I feel like I should learn from others' mistakes.

DS 1 (AKA the Wild Child) told DS 2 one time, “Mama’s gonna kill you with those eyes.”

I never thought he noticed.

As far as cattle prods, we never used one on any of the animals (or people!) Just sort sticks or even a broom.

I don’t think I’d use a cattle prod on the kids. A couple of times I got shocked by the electric fence while barefoot in wet grass and thought my heart stopped.

Use it on yourself all you like.

Don't use it on small children.

I’ve used worse on children. Spoons, etc. Cattle prods aren’t that bad really. In this case though, I still don’t know the circumstances, so I’ll have to hold judgement.

I'd like to give him the Edward II treatment with that cattle prod.

But only after the fair trial, of course, for justice.

The McMartin preschool case is a notable example of a trial that centered around allegations of child abuse and molestation at a preschool, with much of the evidence based on interviews with young children

A forensic interview, at a children’s center, if done properly, addresses that concern. The child is interviewed, just once, by someone who had been trained to ask open ended questions, that do not suggest any particular answer. Law enforcement watches through a mirror, or monitor, and can suggest lines of inquiry to the interviewer, but never had direct contact with the child. The whole thing is videoed so that both the words, and demeanor, of the child and interviewer, can be seen.

The system is not proof against a situation where a child has been effectively coached in advance, but it does keep the interviewer from leading a child to agree with, and even later “recall” ideas that came entirely from the interviewer.

If done properly.

The Wall St Journal did an excellent series out that case.

Dorothy Robinowitz from the Wall St. Journal worked for years to get the real information out about that trial.

That family might still be in prison if it weren’t for Dorothy. She did a magnificent job.

When I was in the Nav there were still a couple of old DC powered Tenders. We were told that electrocution rates on those were several times higher than the rest of the fleet.

"I dunno...but when I was about 10..my grandpa would grab an electric fence wire...and then grab me. Was not that big a deal."

Reminds me of the time we got my little brother to pee on an electric pig fence. Funny but mostly harmless. As for the cattle prod used on children. Yeah, I'd like to give the bastard a little dose of his own medicine.
