Idaho, Montana and Florida saw the highest population growth among U.S. states between 2020-2022, per new U.S. Census Bureau data, while New York, Illinois and Louisiana suffered the most shrinkage.
The big picture: The past few years have been especially turbulent for population trends, with the COVID-19 pandemic affecting birth and death rates, interstate and international migration, and more.
By the numbers: Idaho's population grew by nearly 4.9%, while that of Montana and Florida grew by 3.3% and 3.0%, respectively. Utah and South Carolina came in just a hair under 3%.
New York, meanwhile, shrank by 2.1%, while Illinois and Louisiana lost 1.6% and 1.3% of their populations, respectively. Zoom in: Some cities have been hit particularly hard by population loss.
San Francisco, for example, lost a staggering 7.1% of its residents — a trend that was likely at least partially fueled by tech workers newly unshackled from their offices in the remote work era, combined with high housing costs in the area. Manhattan, however, grew a bit, as Axios' Emily Peck reports, complicating the sweeping "big cities are dying" narrative of the late pandemic era. The intrigue: Some of the fastest growing areas — we're looking at you, Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico — are also some of the most vulnerable to the ongoing effects of climate change, like drought and a dwindling water supply.
The bottom line: It'll take a few more years for the effects of the pandemic to fully shake out, but there's never been a more fascinating time to look at data like this.
Folks are leaving my state, Kansas, but I see an increase in my county, Johnson. And, they are all libs coming in. My quaint little city has been ruined by them.
Don’t worry, despite the huge increases in solid red Montana, Idaho, FL, etc., the government will rig the census again to make sure blue states don’t lose electoral votes or representatives. The left is absolutely evil and we are playing a rigged game folks.

Montana and Idaho are seeing massive influx of liberals from California and Washington who want to live the ‘mountain life’ because they think it’s cute and cozy. Hopefully the winters will drive them all back to the places they’re running from after having destroyed them.
Looks like farming sort of on the decline thanks to Big Govt. Rural down while Suburban up. Urban taking the biggest hit.
I wonder how illegals enter into these numbers and where.

Except for this year, of course. These climate change proponents always seem to neglect to mention when the weather does not correspond with their agenda. The mountains of Utah and CA have record snow packs. Utah has the largest snow pack EVER recorded.

When I moved to NH in 1985(from WNY) it was a solid red state in a sea of blue in the northeast. It was one of the reasons I took the job here as opposed to other job offers in NY and MA.
NH had about 1MM people then. Now, NH has 1.3MM people. It has gone from red to purple, trending blue. We are getting out voted by Liberals that keep moving in.
Keep in mind that VT, yes Vermont was a conservative Yankee state until all the Hippies from NY started moving there in the 1960s & 1970s(Ben & Jerry). That was when VT had a population of 500K. Today it is still around 900K, but the people that moved there mostly came from NY, MA & CT. There are still signs on the dairy barns that say “Take Back VT”. These are the Yankee dairy farmers whose families moved there in the 1700s and 1800s. The real Green Mountain Boys.
My point is, history repeats itself. NC is in the process of becoming more blue. CO has already turned. GA is turning. MT is turning as will Idaho IF enough Dems from CA move there.
When taxpayers get a load of the new NYS budget they’ll peddle faster...
I live in GA. It’s unique because the Dem deluge started when the movie “Deliverance” was made here and we became Hollywood South - now #1 in film production worldwide. GA gives them all sorts of subsidies/tax breaks, etc., so they’re never leaving. Our neighbors - FL,AL,SC weren’t stupid enough to do that. NC has 2 R Senators but Dem retirees are flooding in.
Bullshut.
Influx to Idaho is mostly very conservative.
Retiring LEOs, Fieremen, and conservatives of every type.
This is especially true of North Idaho.

If a massive level of liberals were showing up, the County and State level GOP would not be getting more and more conservative as they are over the last year+.

Same problem in Tennessee...people from California or ‘up north’ are regarded as ‘invaders. Tennessee Stands had a meeting earlier this week which gave transplants to speak out: one of the best lines of the night came from a man from California who stated “We are NOT (liberal) invaders, we are (conservative) REINFORCEMENTS!” Many ‘transplants’ (my wife and I included) are far more conservative than native Tennesseans...it’s not even close.
LOL - If I lived in a Dem state and wanted to retire somewhere beautiful and sane, I might pick Idaho where I’d be surrounded by Mormons. Doesn’t get much safer than that imo.
