IMPORTANT FROM THE SOUTHWEST: The Evacuation of Vicksburgh Possible; Gen. Grant Preparing to Bombard the City (4/5/1863)
New York Times - Times Machine ^ | 4/5/1863

PHILADELPHIA, Saturday, April 4.

A special to the Bulletin from Cincinnati, dated to-day, says:

Telegrams from Gen. HURLBUT, at Memphis, Gen. ASBOTH, at Columbus, and Gen. DODGE, at Corinth, represent that there is a heavy force of rebel cavalry on the Tennessee River, about Florence. The rebels are constructing bridges in that section, and building floats for crossing the Tennessee River -- indicating a movement of the rebel army from Vicksburgh to join BRAGG, or the intention of the latter to move that way. If true, this news is important.

The bombardment of Vicksburgh by Gen. GRANT was to have commenced on the 27th, but was postponed in consequence of the storm.

The attack on Fort Pemberton recommenced on the 27th ult., by the gunboats Baron de Kalb and Chillicothe. The result is not known.

Indications point to the abandonment of the Yazoo Pass expedition. A fleet of twelve transports just out of the pass were ordered to return empty.

There are over 300 boats now at Young's Point.

CINCINNATI, Saturday, April 4.

Passengers who arrived at Cairo yesterday stated that our late movement on Haines' Bluff was a failure, and that our fleet and accompanying transports had returned to Young's Point.

Gen. GRANT had succeeded in placing a battery of eighty-four pounder "Parrotts," beyond the levee in a position to easily reach Vicksburgh, and was about to open the bombardment.

CAIRO, Ill., April 4.

From below we learn that the water still continues to pour through the "cut" at Lake Providence. Nearly all the town is submerged.

The troops have been compelled to move their encampments further up the river.

The tugboats pass into the lake, but the current is too strong for the transports.

Ah! The promotion of Lt. Col. Alfred W. Ellet to Brigadier General makes the paper.

Back in March, one of niteowl77's ancestors had sufficiently recovered from a nearly fatal case of typhoid fever to be discharged from his Illinois volunteer infantry regiment and re-mustered into Ellet's 1st Infantry Regiment of the U.S. Mississippi Marine Brigade.
