Amsterdam tells party-loving British tourists to stay away

Keep calm and stay away.

Amsterdam has launched a new ad campaign targeting party-loving British tourists — telling them to think again.

The campaign, aimed at British men aged between 18 and 35, wants to curb these “nuisance” travelers, who overindulge in the Netherlands capital where marijuana and prostitution are legal.

The new ads are featured prominently whenever someone in Britain searches for terms like “stag party Amsterdam,” “cheap hotel Amsterdam” or “pub crawl Amsterdam.”

The accompanying videos show the repercussions British men can face when coming to the city to get “messy.”

It’s not Amsterdam’s fault Brits can hold their liquor.

They are not well liked in other Euro tourist spots, either.

Remember ‘Football Hooligans’?....................

The South of Portugal is dotted with small beach towns, with lots of resorts, airbnb, etc... Wife and I like to visit the area.

Most are quite calm, but near to the center of every town, there is a crowded, cheap hotel area, with one or two large pubs filled almost exclusively with Brits. They are a magnet for the trashiest, low-end, young tourists from the UK. Even with my desire to have a pint and chat with some folks from the UK, I learned to stay away.

Its OK, even normal British people avoid them.

First entire page of a google for “pub crawl Amsterdam” showed nothing of the sort, just ads and routes.

Was in Amsterdam just as Covid was starting, Feb of 2020. I was amazed at the crowd of folks at the bars and touring the Red Light District (their hookers look really nice actually).

When I mentioned the crowd to locals they said this is the low season, the spring and summer was when it really hits. They said the new mayor was wanting to cut back on the pot license to sell and had run on getting rid of the hookers.

I live in Florida. Every year the college crowd comes to certain beaches. Families and normal tourists are advised to stay away. Maybe they bring money, but I think they cause such disruption for most of the locals the locals would rather they weren’t there. If you could calculate in all the costs, the added police, the extra medical services, the damages, I wonder if their money would be a net positive. When you have eight people trashing a hotel room, for example, I know from experience it takes a lot to turn it around for the next user.

You hear a lot of stories about how Europeans dont really want “Americans” around but I didnt experience that.

More than 30 but not quite 40 years ago I spent some years in Europe. Already then there were plenty of places that we would go and the locals didnt seem to like us or want us there until they realized we werent Brits then they treated us at least as well as a local if not better.

I once asked a Finn on a social media site if I should learn some Swedish if I visited Finland. Since Swedish is an official language in Finland and much easier for an English-speaker to learn than Finnish, I figured that by speaking Swedish, I would not stand out as an "ugly American." The Finn replied that it would be better to speak English, since Americans are not disliked in Finland, but Swedes are.

I also heard if you go to Spain, to Catalonian cities like Barcelona, if you speak Spanish, they won’t talk to you, if they think you’re from Spain, as they want folks from Spain to speak Catalan instead, but if you are a foreigner, and have an accent, and they know you are an American, they will speak Spanish to you.

I last visited Spain in 1965, when Francisco Franco was still in charge. Castilian Spanish was the official language and all the signs in Barcelona, and everywhere else in Spain, were in that language. From what I have heard, today, all the signs in Barcelona are in Catalan.
