Deep within the heart of Yellowstone National Park lies an imminent threat. The tranquility of the park is shattered by the ominous signs of a colossal volcano waking from its slumber. The recent sudden uplift of the ground has sent shockwaves through the scientific community and sparked a sense of unease across the entire nation. Despite Yellowstone's history of sporadic eruptions, nothing could have prepared us for this unprecedented and terrifying event. As the park officials take drastic measures to safeguard visitors, the question that remains on everyone's mind is: Will this slumbering giant awaken and unleash an unimaginable catastrophe? Follow us on this perilous journey as we delve into the mysteries of Yellowstone and uncover the truth behind the recent closure of the park. Yellowstone National Park may seem like a serene and picturesque location, but it's anything but ordinary. Established in 1872, Yellowstone is known as the world's first National Park, and it's also home to the Yellowstone Caldera that has been closely monitored by scientists since 1923. The caldera is a massive basin that sits at the peak of the Yellowstone volcano, and it's often referred to as a "supervolcano." According to the Natural History Museum in London, this term is used because the Yellowstone Caldera has the potential to unleash a magnitude-eight eruption on the Volcanic Explosivity Index. This kind of eruption could discharge more than 1,000 cubic kilometers (240 cubic miles) of material. To put that into perspective, the famous eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines in 1991, which is considered one of the most powerful volcanic eruptions in recent history, was only rated a 6 on the same index. That means that the Yellowstone supervolcano eruption could be over 100 times more powerful than the one at Mount Pinatubo!

It is very hot on the mountain in summer and it is barren with no shade or trees. I remember seeing people climbing up with no water wearing flip flops on their feet, no sunscreen or hats.

The regional airport is PIH (Pocatello). It is 7 miles west of the I-15/I-86 interchange. Sky West. There is nothing in Inkom. It would be a very dangerous place to attempt placing an airstrip. Narrow valley with steep mountains.

I don't lose sleep over Yellowstone. If it goes, we are all screwed. Until that happens, I just get up each day and live a normal life. Maintaining a good immune system to dodge the daily threat of COVID is a more tangible threat. I just helped my wife with a COVID test. She's feeling crappy this morning. Switching shifts today from the 7 AM - 7 PM (Sun/Mon/Tue) 7 AM - 1 PM Wed to graveyard Tu/Wed/Th 9 PM - 7 AM, Fri 5 PM - 3 AM. Both times when she caught COVID at the office, it was shared with me at home. Hoping we aren't doing that again.

I was kind of kidding about Inkom except I did read it has the “smallest airport in the world”.

Just stick a tap in the damned thing, and store it. Balloons for the kiddies. Sound effects for cartoons. Zeppelins borne aloft by real green energy in plentiful supply. What are all these greenies waiting for? Get a pipeline started already. And you’ll be venting off a dangerous accumulation of gas, too. Yogi and Booboo with thank you. And as for Ranger Smith, he’ll benefit, too, but who cares about that jive, racist Mofo.

I was just talking to a friend who has never been to Yellowstone. After your recommendation I suggested she visit the Lassen volcanic area if she can’t make it to Jellystone (she drives back and forth to CA like you do). I will as well. I have been fortunate as a non-affluent person to have visited Yellowstone and the geothermal area in New Zealand (Rotarua - North Island) and also Iceland (near Reykjavík but pretty much all of Iceland is a geothermal park). And I saw a steam vents on Mt. Baker near Bellingham and maybe Mt. Rainier as a kid (memory is hazy on Rainier, maybe not).

My instructor was sort of playing chicken with me. My wheels kissed the tumbleweeds before he reached over and shoved the throttle to the wall. When I did my check ride, the FAA examiner pulled a last minute "short field landing...on the numbers". I did exactly that and we taxied back to the FBO where he signed me off.

What was your primary flight training aircraft? I was in rented Beechcraft Skipper Model 77. I really liked that plane. The almost tumbleweed landing was in my own PA-22/108.
