More than 1,200 tiny quakes hit Yellowstone Park, but jitters are few

CHEYENNE, Wyo. - Yellowstone National Park is shaking again, but jitters seem few so far.

Over eight days, more than 1,270 mostly tiny earthquakes have struck between Old Faithful and West Yellowstone. The strongest dozen or so have ranged between magnitudes 3.0 and 3.8.

That's strong enough to feel - barely. The vast majority have been too weak to be felt even nearby.

Likewise, online chatter about an imminent volcanic eruption in Yellowstone hasn't really picked up compared with the attention that a similar quake swarm drew just over a year ago.

"Perhaps we have done a better job in the past year or so helping the public understand that earthquake swarms are not unusual in Yellowstone," park spokesman Al Nash said Monday.

I am curious to know if there is a noticeable change in animal behavior.

You thinking it’s because we don’t suvive into the end times?

USGS says 1600 shakes which makes it the second largest swarm since we been taking recordings and it isn’t over yet.

The depth has been holding near 9 and 10 miles which is a good sign.
winoneforthegipper thought you would want to see this thread. We have been following this swarm from day one on this thread:

The entire Yellowstone Park is sitting on one of the largest volcanic caldera in the world. And the ground has all these little trembles, as the huge burst upwards is readying. When it goes off, all the predictions about how we are “destroying” the environment for the future will seem to be somewhat trifling. Mankind simply cannot do anything to cause such an event, and could do even less to prevent it.

That would be a game-changer, all right.

Thanks Steve!

There was a shallow quake away from the main cluster today and at a very shallow depth. However the swarm is for sure on the wane.

Mankind simply cannot do anything to cause such an event (super volcano eruption at Yellowstone), and could do even less to prevent it.

Not to be picky, but I imagine about 16 Megatons a couple of hundred feet down might stir things up a bit... not that anyone would even seriously think about doing such.

More to the point, could a massive geothermal energy plant around there draw off enough heat and pressure to be significant, while at the same time, produce pollution free energy? Dunno; just asking. And no, I'm not a tree hugger!

fascinating geology there.

It will erupt again. Probably not tomorrow, but almost certainly within the next 100K years or so if what I have read is correct.

I sometimes wonder if Long Valley in CA will go off again or has it gone completely dormant?

My dog apparently went berserk just prior to an earthquake a couple of years ago. I forget the magnitude. AFAIK there was no major damage in the affected area, but it jostled me awake.

She was staying overnight at the veterinary clinic following a surgery. The staff related to me that she suddenly became frantic to get out of her cage. They tried to calm her down, but without success. When they opened the cage door she tried to bolt. It was at that point that they (and I at home) felt the quake.

not by a long shot is Long Valley dormant. There was a small swarm and still going and it was shallow.

Why these small swarms are not called a swarm I am not sure:

Did you notice how shallow the last four quakes have been?
