TAMPA, Fla. (WFTS) — It's what keeps Florida going; tourism. Visit Florida said 137.6 million people visited here in 2022, the most ever. In 2021, tourism brought $101.9 billion dollars into the state's economy.
"Florida is a nice place to be. You got your beaches, you got your tourists, you see people all over the world," said Gregory Franklin as he strolled the Tampa Riverwalk.
But the Florida State Chapter of the NAACP has its sights set on hitting the state where it hurts most.
"We are letting our voices be heard, and we are just letting people know that we're not gonna take it. We're not just gonna sit still. We're gonna stand up and we're gonna fight. And when we fight, we win," said Hillsborough County Chapter President Yvette Lewis.
Over the weekend, the Florida State NAACP unanimously voted to ask the NAACP National Board to issue a travel advisory. The advisory would ask people to forego visiting and moving to the sunshine state.
"Saying you don't want AP African American Studies here because they have certain topics in it, certain categories, certain words in it. You don't want companies to have the word diversity, equity and inclusion because it has institutional racism in their policy. You know, it takes us back. And we've been fighting so hard," Lewis said.
This isn't the first time a group has pushed for a travel advisory or boycott.
The NAACP issued a boycott of South Carolina in 1999 over the confederate flag being flown at the state's capitol building. It was lifted 15 years after the flag came down. However, that ban cost the state nearly two decades of NCAA tournaments, championships, and bowl games.
In Indiana, a 2015 boycott of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act cost the state more than $60 million dollars as organizers of conferences and other events chose to visit other locations, according to Forbes.
To visitor Gregory Franklin, this travel advisory could yield the same result.
"I think it could change in a way where it would, I believe the state will lose money," he said.
Lewis sees this as the opportunity to see change in Tallahassee.
"My hope is that they will roll back some of their thoughts, their ideas and some of these bills that target a specific race," she said.
The NAACP National Board reconvenes in May. That is the earliest they'll be able to discuss the travel advisory.

My dad worked with, and was good friends with the Head of the NAACP in a US State, and I was with his son, who followed in his footsteps. They worked together to purchase sports equipment for sports, mainly football gear, and shoes for track and BB. This was in the 1960’s, when this organizational Head worried over real problems with the costs of physicals for players, and the inability to play because of lower income. We lived near the poor neighborhoods, where people rented. We lived on the hill nearby, where familys had purchased these same rental houses, and renovated them into homes instead of duplexes.
I don’t know what is true of the Head Honcho of the NAACP in 2023 is, but he was unpaid, collecting funds for travel expenses only. He also was an employee of the “Yards” working on military ships. Essentially, one of the thousands, working for a living.
I remember in particular that my little brother had some “real porn” he was sharing with the son of this NAACP head. He and my Father traced the source, delivered a lesson, and kept kids from this porn of the type the internet age would find common. No news reports, no glowing stories. They did what FATHERS have done for millenia.
These two men would NEVER have stood silent in the face of obvious bias and segregation that the group stands for now. They were sincerely working to improve the lot of their membership. Jesse Jackson, Al Sharptongue, Revs all, along with the black weasel of the day Benjamin Crump raking in millions of fees stirring up hate.
Not only are REAL Fathers of blacks completely absent, but of both skin colors. This type of grassroot activism is rare.
Imagine the stories, a WHITE racisst, accuses NAACP hero of spreading porn to the innocent white kids. Today, that would be the story. Instead, it was a Father and a Father, doing what was best quietly.
How about we get back to that world. You know? That racist world of 1969?
I forgot to add, we only had 2 black kids on the sports teams, and ALL the Fathers white or black joined into the organization to fully equip ALL who wished to play. All this without the support of the school district.
I added that paragraph to dispel it was about improving the sports teams. It was not, it was about people taking responsibility for an extracurricular sport.
How do you suppose an NAACP boycott effects tourism..

That is a slanderous statement. CRT - Critical Race Theory - and any curriculum that uses it as de facto “truth” is not mere “African American Studies” but is a Marxist reinterpretation of American history. The NAACP was long ago captured by American Marxist agendas.
Also, EVERYONE needs to keep in mind, there are approximately 47 million “Black” Americans and membership in the NAACP is about 300,000 people, or about 0.6% of the American “Black” population.
