Why is any 97 year old allowed to drive???? I firmly believe that all states should require some kind of comprehensive medical evaluation of all people over a certain age...maybe 70,or 75,or 80...applying for a license. And I'd also support no licenses to be issued to someone over a certain age...maybe 90,maybe even younger.
And for the record I'm a lot closer to 80 than I care to admit.

Bleeding from the nose & mouth, a possible concussion, treated at the scene, and then picked up by a friend. Hope he’s getting further medical evaluation & treatment, as needed. He’s a Lefty, but an icon at 97.

Dick Van Dyke is probably not used to driving in these conditions. Remember before the current storms, we used to believe that it never rains in southern California. There was even a song by that name, back in 1972. And here in Kentucky, a wet state by comparison, we get a string of accidents after a dry spell ends.

I’m guessing he also ran into the hassock.

Owning a car is expensive, at my vacation home I do not have a car. Going to town (2 miles) walk or ride with a neighbor 3-4 times a week to do business, buy groceries, have a couple of beers. Taxi back home at $5 x 20 trips is $100 a month, pay no gas, no registration, no insurance and never bought a car.

A lot of older people living independent lives, myself included, who need to drive, and can do so safely. That said, Uber & Lyft have made it easier to get around, if needed occasionally. Per the article, the Highway Patrol has requested the DMV retest Van Dyke for his driving ability.

My nearest neighbor here in rural TN is 90, and I (class A CDL holder) have ridden to town with him. He’s does just fine.

Wow. I was surprised that a 97 year old is still allowed to drive - wonder if he were licensed.
My mother was able to not only keep her driver’s license at age 90 but the DMV in California gave her a five-year renewal. All she had to do was take an eye test and a 10-question, ridiculous written test and she was good to go for five more years. No driving test involved.
Not surprised that the majority of accidents are caused by the very young and very old.
