No "friendly" Celt can this year complain of the way in which St. Patrick and his memory green were treated by the heavens above or the earth and all that are in Gotham. A finer day than yesterday the happiest Irishman never desired, and what with the smiling sun, the favoring breeze, the popular cheer, and the universal good nature that prevailed, it was within the power of every Green-Erinite to celebrate St. Patrick's Day, not only "in the morning" but all through the day and night, and far into to-day.
The intention, announced by the moving spirits of one proceedings in honor of the Holy Departed Saint, to celebrate the day this year with more than usual pomp and ceremony, was fulfilled to the letter. The day was finer, the procession larger, the streets fuller, the jollity more universal, the balls more numerous and the private potations deeper than at any time within reportorial recognition.
For many years it was a matter of dispute as to what day of the month was entitled to the honor of St. Patrick's nativity, but, as all well-informed in Celtic literature will remember, one Father MULCAHEY settled the dispute in a manner at once original, unique and characteristic of his nation. The story is well told in the following favorite
