Rival Colorado Towns Fight Over a Frozen Dead Guy

Nederland was horrified at first when it learned a resident had cryogenically preserved his deceased grandfather, but now it is grieving the celebrity corpse’s possible move to Estes Park

—For more than 20 years, the tiny mountain town of Nederland has enjoyed a macabre claim to fame: a cryogenically immortalized grandfather lying under dry ice in a shed.

As Estes Park prepares to kick off the new Frozen Dead Guy Days on Friday, the festival’s former home is grappling with the fallout, and asking itself tough questions. Who owns the culture of a frozen dead guy? And what is Nederland without him?

The chilling saga began in 1994, when Nedheads, as locals call themselves, discovered that Trygve Bauge, a Norwegian town resident and avid fan of cryogenics, had frozen his deceased grandfather, Bredo Morstoel, and was keeping him behind the family home. Town leaders quickly drafted an ordinance against storing bodies, but Grandpa Bredo was, quite literally, grandfathered in.

The three-day festival always began with a parade of hearses and an evening Blue Ball where attendees competed to be crowned Ice Queen and Grandpa. There was a race between teams of costumed pallbearers carrying members in coffins. A frozen T-shirt contest would test participants’ ability to unfold and don a rock-solid shirt. Frozen turkey bowling and a polar plunge into ice-covered water capped off the theme.

The owners, two local women, sold the rights to the festival this year to Estes Park hotelier John Cullen for $250,000.

Unlike in past years, the Estes Park event will charge admission—$45 to watch events and $99 to attend the Blue Ball. Local businesses are embracing the theme to host events such as Thick & Thawed Burrr-lesque and Frosty Balls drag queen bingo.

I am reminded of an old cartoon from when Cryogenics first began.

A group of angels in Heaven are standing around with their harps. St Peter says to one of them...”You’ll have to go back now. They’re thawing you out!”

Also by Hoyle Nix.

Working on the railroad,
Sleeping on the ground,
Eating saltine crackers,
Ten cents a pound....

I do love Bob Wills, Spade Cooley and Hoyle Nix! Now THAT is country music I was born to love!

and $99 to attend the Blue Ball...

That's a little spendy but I suppose it's better than no balls at all.

Nix actually wrote and first recorded the song.
Later it was covered by other artists, Bob Wills & Tex playboys being the favorite wax version here.
