School Board of Trustees voted to make Narcan readily available at every school

SAN ANTONIO – The potentially life-saving nasal spray that combats fentanyl or opioid-related overdose will soon be available at every North East Independent School District campus, a press release said.

The North East ISD Board of Trustees voted Monday night to make Narcan or Naloxone, a medication reversing the effects of a fentanyl or opioid-related drug overdose, readily available at every school.

The press release said that the life-saving nasal spray Narcan will be kept at the school clinic and the location where emergency medical supplies are stored, such as the campus Automated External Defibrillator (AED) cabinet. North East Police Department (NEPD) officers will also carry the medication with them, the district said.

The board of trustees approved Narcan after receiving feedback from the district’s medical advisory committee, which is made up of district staff and community health officials.

The press release said the impact of the opioid epidemic across the nation promoted the district to pursue Narcan through the Texas Targets Opioid Response (TTOR) project. The UT-Health San Antonio School of Nursing is distributing the medication at no cost to NEISD.

NEISD said Narcan has been found to be safe and will not harm a person if it is administered to someone showing overdose symptoms as a precautionary measure, much like an EpiPen.

As for when campuses will receive the Narcan, that is still not known. The district says once all of its schools are equipped with the medication, they will let the community know.

A year ago, my wife had her bad hip replaced.

I bought her ten go home meds, they ran from Tylenol to various forms of oral codeine/narcotics with the exception of a $35 charge for for a box of injectable NarCan.

4 weeks later we returned most of the scheduled drugs and the unopened box of NarCan. Of course they were destroyed by the pharmacy.

I discussed the not used and not wanted NarCan. The pharmacist said that was due to the lawyers in case someone stole and used the Narcan and died.

How can you return them? I picked up a prescription for a relative once, ad it was the wrong one, but the pharmacy said they couldn't accept a return. Maybe states have different laws.

Can someone tell me again WHY we are saving these people? They made a choice to do drugs. So they got some bad ones.

Maybe start teaching taking responsibility for one’s decisions in school instead of the correct pronouns or which bathroom to use.

Call me cold hearted but I think overdoses should not be treated and Darwin should be allowed to thin the heard. In the short and long runs society would be better off.

They have a converted former outside mailbox with a one way drop with a locked top and only the top pharmacists have a key to it.

The converted mailbox is insight of most pharmacists working at that station. It is inside and again in sight of most pharmacists and techs working.

A free clinic used to take unused drugs, and they stopped last year due to the potential liabilities.
