The US Postal Service is buying 9,250 Ford E-Transit battery-electric vehicles and 14,000 EV charging stations from three different suppliers as part of its plans to electrify a large portion of its mail delivery fleet. In an announcement post on Tuesday, the agency said it hasn’t finalized plans for where the vehicles and infrastructure will be deployed but intends to “begin building out its charging infrastructure across a minimum of 75 locations within the next 12 months.”

The chargers will help power a growing number of EVs. In December, the USPS announced its plans to add 66,000 electric vehicles to its fleet by 2028. While around 45,000 of those will be “Next Generation Delivery Vehicles” (NGDV) manufactured by Oshkosh, the agency said it also planned to incorporate 21,000 commercial off-the-shelf EVs. The E-Transits will make up around 44 percent of those commercial vehicles.
It’s not necessarily a surprise that the USPS went with the E-Transit, despite the agency saying that it went through “a competitive search” to select it. For one, Ford is also involved in the Next Generation Delivery Vehicle project, providing engines and other components to Oshkosh. And when the USPS was considering commercial alternatives to the NGDV for an environmental impact statement, it used the E-Transit as an example of a commercial off-the-shelf EV.

I see stupid people everywhere!
I used to work with a man whose father was a milkman in Australia. He used a mule drawn wagon until the 1990s. The mule was trained to walk slowly while the deliveries were made. It would avoid obstacles like a parked automobile and allowed him to do the job with one man and one mule. When he had to change to a truck his cost went up and using the truck with a driver actually took more time.
As slow as mail carriers go down the street an animal drawn vehicle might be more efficient.
Mail will be late while the electric vehicles charge up or catch fire and stamp price will increase to pay the electric bill.
It would work great for a compact urban route.
The USPS employs 658,000 people.
“Yeah, I’m going to have to examine my USPS usage in a serious manner.”
USPS postage stamps can be bought at a discount from China!
The e-transit vans from Ford are pretty good, actually.
And the electrical grid and infrastrucure can’t support the EV’s so we will be forced to “Walk, Bike or Scooter” or use public transportation. ZERO cars as we now know them is their plan.
If this goes like all the other attempts by the USPS to save money ... Congressional Hearings and a $5 Forever Stamp should be in our future.
Deep State bribes Ford with fleet sales.
Using taxpayer money.
Can’t wait see them on the side of the road, probably burning.
In frigid climates the EV's face the most challenges, though instant heat when coming back to the truck in city deliveries (postman/women parks and walks a block or two) will be liked.
Snow stops them now too.
