Quarterback AJ McCarron took a pay cut — from $4 million to $60,000 — so his sons could watch him play in the XFL instead of sitting on a bench in the NFL

Former Alabama star QB AJ McCarron is now a player in the rebooted XFL spring league.

McCarron says he passed on being a backup in the NFL so sons could watch him play.

Dwayne Johnson praised the move saying it meant a lot "personally."

AJ McCarron is now throwing footballs in the rebooted XFL spring league, and while some might look at it as a step backward, the quarterback sees it as a huge opportunity for him and his sons on a personal level.

This weekend, the former Alabama Crimson Tide star led the St. Louis Battlehawks to the second-straight come-from-behind win to move to 2-0 on the young season.

After the game, an emotional McCarron spoke about the decision to take a spot in the XFL over a chance to make more money by continuing his career as a backup in the NFL.

"Ever since I came out of college, I've been counted out a little bit," he told ESPN. "It's just fun to come out here and play, I missed playing. Not always just being a backup — and that's a great living, it really is, and I absolutely love it — but I love playing. This is special, and I can't thank the XFL enough."

$5000 a week for 12 weeks, yes not $4 mil, but job satisfaction is something. And if he was moneywise he should have enough to live comfortably.

Hope it works out for him.

I love it. Also I love hearing the XFL is coming back because I remember enjoying watching it before COVID stopped it.

I was just going to say, if he invested his millions while sitting on the bench wisely, he should do just fine at the reduced salary.

Respect. Best job in the NFL is the backup QB on any team.

You’re assuming McCarron could have found a backup job. This may be his only chance to work his way back onto an NFL roster.

With his injury history (a torn ACL in 2021) it's not sure that he would make a roster. But, there are a few guys that figured out how to stay on without much playing time- Chase Daniels comes to mind. Josh Johnson, who played about one quarter of the NFC championship game is another.

I have season tickets to the Battlehawks, so I'm excited to see McCarron have success. I'm just hoping they play a full season.

I think he earned $15 million in the NFL (who knows how much of that went to Uncle Sam and how much is left). So it may be he's done with seeing the NFL as a money maker.

It also may be he's looking at one day managing a team.

I was wondering about that. So, this is the gal who elicited the admiration of Brent Musburger (with said admiration getting Brent semi-cancelled). She is indeed an attractive young woman.

They need 2 more kids. he wants his sons to be like the sons of Archie. Montana’s kids don’t make the cut. I blame the mom’s genes.

Did you know that McCarron had a bad jet ski accident when he was 5. He was slammed face first into a dock and crushed his face and had reconstructive surgery. His dad was driving.

Yes, Dan Orlovsky - now an ESPN commentator - was a back up. His highlight of his career was stepping out of the back of the end zone for Detroit Lions.

My guess is he’s trying to go the Kurt Warner route in reverse. He’s not getting better sitting the bench. You’ve got to have the game reps to get better and this may be the route to a starting position in the NFL.
