Actress Christina Applegate attended the 2023 Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday, likely the last time she will attend an award show amid her ongoing battle with multiple sclerosis.
Applegate, 51, who was diagnosed with the neurodegenerative disease in 2021, appeared on the red carpet wearing a black gown while standing next to her daughter. She also had a cane with an “FU MS” sticker attached to the side.
The “Married With Children” alum said earlier this month that she was done with awards shows after the SAG Awards because she couldn’t imagine putting more energy into continuing to perform in her current condition.
“It’s my last awards show as an actor probably, so it’s kind of a big deal,” Applegate, 51, explained to The Los Angeles Times. “Right now, I couldn’t imagine getting up at 5 a.m. and spending 12 to 14 hours on a set; I don’t have that in me at this moment.”
Applegate revealed her diagnosis in 2021 but pushed on to complete the third and final season of her Netflix show “Dead to Me” — an effort she said was successful in part because of the support and friendship of co-star Linda Cardellini.
“I cry when I talk about Linda because I love her so much. The next person who gets to work with her, I hope they realize how incredibly lucky they are, because not only is she an incredible human but she’s a divine artist and is right there, present for you, no matter what,” Applegate said.
The “Anchorman” star said that the Netflix production crew was there for her as well, allowing her to take time off to process her diagnosis and begin treatment while helping her to work around obstacles the disease presents in real time.
“I was a wreck every day, but most of that wreck would take place in my trailer by myself. But there were times I’d break down on set and be like, ‘I can’t, we have to take a break, I need a half-hour,’ and everyone was so loving that it was okay,” she said.
Applegate recently revealed that in the 18 months since her diagnosis, she has gained nearly 40 pounds and relies on a cane to walk. She even attended her own Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony barefoot, explaining that MS can cause instability and discomfort, especially when wearing shoes.
“I’m never going to accept this. I’m pissed,” she said at the time.

My favorite episode with Kelly Bundy

You have to be pretty smart to play a character as dumb as Kelly Bundy and make it convincing. Her health issues are very unfortunate.
That’s gold, Jerry. Gold.
She was also good in “Anchorman”.
She never did anything good besides Married with Children.
This is a tragedy. So young. Christina had great talent. I am a big fan.
Yong, beautiful, talented and funny.......................
That’s right! I forgot about that. Geez…
Damn.
I had a co-worker, a very beautiful lady, who ended up completely disabled from this. She tried so hard to stay at work and productive but it eventually did her in. Stunning gal, even the last time I saw her.
In the early 1990s, my completely healthy 42 year old female cousin was diagnosed with MS. Four years later, she was completely dead.
Amazingly, her sister lived just a few blocks from the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, which at that time was considered to be the #1 clinic for MS in the world. No matter what they tried, the disease just blew right through it.
The good news - the death toll from MS in the USA has dropped to almost zero because of new drugs in the last 20 years.
However, Applegate's case seems to be very aggressive.
God love her. I believe she already suffered from breast cancer.
Christina and the older actor who played her dad on “Married with Children” have had the most successful careers after that show ended.
I never hear anything from the actor who played the younger brother, unless it’s some rant having to do with LGBT causes.
The mother actress has done very well also.................
Bflr.
A little sidetrack but something I do think about when the rich get the terrible diseases and disabilities that people get is the difference that wealth makes.
As bad as the suffering and lack of capabilities must be, it must very very helpful to be able to hire pros for everything that you need, gardeners, maids, nurses, chefs, nutritionists, accountants, and therapists all to come to your home or live with you, the ability to buy and have installed any devices that would be useful, from elevators to hospital equipment to electronics for communication and entertainment.
“She also had breast cancer...”
Included in the total treatment was a complete double mastectomy. It seems that her mom and a couple of aunts died from breast cancer, one of the reasons Christina was so obsessed with early detection.
Christina became something of an advocate for women who chose the mastectomy route having access to reconstructive surgery at affordable costs.
Quite the lady.
Yeah, The truly wealthy have a loving family.
That sounded bitter, or angry.
Just like all people some have a loving family, or family that is still alive, or no family, or family that isn’t helpful, or whatever they have.
I don’t know what that has to do with my post.
She was really hot when she was on Married with Children but 30 years and bouts with breast cancer and now MS are taking their toll.
