CORNELIUS, Ore. — Cornelius Fire offered a warning of what not to do when trying to melt ice off your gutters.

Firefighters said Saturday they were called out to a house fire that started when someone used a blow torch to de-ice their gutters.

Our neighbors in upstate NY did the same to unfreeze water pipes for the over garage apt. Whole garage went up in minutes. It was quite a sight.

If Darwin was in full force, the person would have fallen to their death through a hole in the roof of their own making.

And when the toilets freeze up, use gasoline and light them to melt the ice.

Nah, I just light a couple of big logs (the wooden kind) on each side of the toilet to melt the toilet water in the bowl.

My ex-brother-in-law used a propane torch to melt a frozen fuel line of a car in his father’s garage. The resulting fire gutted the inside of the house, while the snow on the roof kept the building from completely burning down. This turned out to be the worse possible outcome insurance wise.

Not quite the same but somewhat related in the “hold muh beer” dept.

I had a bad earache once, no ear drops but I did have the toothache numbing agent, Numzit Jel.

I proceeded to pack my painful ear with it. It took me days to get it all back out of my ear. Can’t remember if it worked or not.

The best way to keep ice off your gutters is to live in Florida.

Not to quibble (well, yeah, actually), but the roof didn't simply "catch on fire," it was set on fire, unintentionally.

I did it my way....Hooked up the hose to my hot water in the laundry area...melted the snow. Two days later, we were using pick axes to remove the 4 inches of ice. lol

Some of the fires of “stupidity” are just clever insurance scams. How can an insurance company pay a homeowner who started a fire in his house? Scam.

Holy crap. Just replaced my roof for 24 grand. I think it will impossible with the insurance company to have them pay. I believe the owner will lose. Hope he cleaned out his couch for loose change. He’s gonna need it.

Decades ago I lived in an old Victorian in SF and my landlord set fire to the building while trying to strip exterior paint with a blowtorch. He had packed up and gone home but the flame had gotten under the gingerbread trim and smoldered until the middle of the night when we woke up to the smell of smoke.

We were already awake because my then baby son was a lousy sleeper and kept waking up at night. In this case, we were lucky that he did. Called SFFD and the landlord and they came and ripped off the gingerbread and put out the fire. But the fire actually started up again about 12 hours later the next day so we called again and that time they were successful.

Putting out these DIY wood fires isn’t easy!
