Karma isn’t always immediate, but for Stephen Munoz Espinoza, his patience was rewarded swiftly after being cut in line.
A 43-year-old resident of Delray Beach in Palm Beach County, Florida, Espinoza was in line to buy a lottery ticket at his local supermarket, when a stranger rudely cut in front of him. Many in this situation might have reacted differently than Espinoza did that day. Instead of getting angry, or causing a scene, Stephen simply maneuvered away from the ticket machine, and instead bought a ‘500X THE CASH’ Scratch-Off game at the counter.
“It was the end of a long day, and I was tired. I stopped at Publix and was about to buy a ticket at the machine when a man cut right in front of me,” Espinoza told lottery officials.
It is a good thing he did, because the ticket that Espinoza ended up purchasing instead was a winner, and quite a significant one. The ticket netted Espinoza a hefty one million dollars, or a one-time, lump-sum payment of $820,000 which he opted for. The 43-year-old said he plans to use some of the winnings to buy a home for his family, and the store that sold him the ticket even gets a cool $2,000 bonus commission.
Had things gone differently, Spinoza may have missed out on the winning ticket. What was at first an unfair annoyance- being cut in line- turned in to a fortuitous change of events. Keeping your cool is always the way to go, and in this case Spinoza’s patience was rewarded handsomely.
The Florida Lottery twitter account shared the below post, referring to Spinoza as both a gentleman, and a (newly minted) millionaire after his calm demeanor led to the winning ticket.
500x The Cash is a $50 scratch-off.
It his case it paid off big-time, but I am always amazed when I see folks who spend $50 a pop on those scratch-offs, let alone the $30 and $20 ones... Still happy for him, though.
Cool story.
I love it! That rude entitled brat lost. I love when the good guys win!
I hope that somebody butts in my line, so I can calmly win the $40 million Lotto Max prize.
If you pick your own numbers I don’t think it would make a difference. Random computer picks....who knows?
I am happy for the man but I would be happier if he had bought his ticket at a privately owned market.
The seller of the ticket gets a bonus for selling the ticket.
He bought at a corporate chain and that bonus will be largely unnoticed on their bottom line.
A small store owner receiving that bonus might make major improvements to his store or be saved from bankruptcy.
Shop local buy local.
Except then he wouldn't have won. It was a scratch off ticket from that particular location that won.
Reminds me of a similar story in which a guy was at a convenience store to buy himself a lottery ticket. The jackpot at the time was massive, so there was a long line of other people behind him waiting to buy tickets too.
When the lottery retailer printed out his ticket and slid it across the counter to give it to him, the guy directly behind him rudely grabbed it for himself, slapped his 2 bucks on the counter, and left the store. So, the lottery retailer simply printed up a new ticket to give to him.
Guess who won the jackpot? Had the rude guy patiently waited his turn, that winning ticket would have been his.
They don’t give away the million-dollar prizes on the $1 scratchers.
Generally speaking, the $20, $25 and $30 scratch offs are usually 4, 5 and 6 games on one ticket. So you’re getting 5 games for $25. Haven’t seen the $50 scratch off but I would assume there are 10 games or “chances” on one large scratch off ticket.
It would have been even sweeter if the line-cutter had bought a ticket from the same game from the same ticket roll before him .
I got my biggest hit ever on Super Lotto Saturday- $53. When I get $100 million tomorrow I’ll remember you all fondly
There was never an opportunity to reward the locally owned convenience store or whatever because the ticket wasn’t there.
I know him...
Yes, you are right.
But if no one buys the tickets there they would not sell them.
But if no one buys the tickets there they would not sell them.
You will have to excuse me I try to support the small business man whenever I can.
And I never buy scratch offs.
