Biden Should Give Ukraine What It Needs to Win
The New York Times (via MSN.com) ^ | 18 February 2023 | Nicholas Kristof

Posted on 02/18/2023 3:30:19 PM PST by zeestephen

While the risk of escalation can't be ruled out, it must be balanced against the risks of allowing this conflict to drag on as Ukrainians and Russians are killed daily. Putin will negotiate seriously when he sees no military path forward — and that may happen if his hold on Crimea becomes untenable.

Good points, however I might have to disagree, a little, about Russia’s reasons for an invasion.

A lot of the Zelensky FanBois have no problem ignoring what he was doing to ethnic Russians living in the eastern part of Ukraine. Straight up genocide.

The controversy around Lipp began in March when one of her videos explaining the history and the context of the war went viral.

In Lipp’s viral video, she said, “you need to understand that Russia has been asking for eight years that the Minsk agreement be upheld. Ukraine did not adhere to it, nor did they approach the Donbas region in an attempt to come to agreement.”

“Instead, they have been bombing the outskirts of the Donbas region for eight years. They are shooting at civilians, who now also have to live in completely shot-up houses. Very many people have died here,” Lipp continued.

In the video, Lipp alleged that the Donbas citizens who overwhelmingly voted to secede from Ukraine in 2014 had been, “thankful that Russia finally did something”.

Lip added, “Finally, the people here have been liberated from the terror that they’ve been experiencing for the last eight years,” under continuous shelling by the Ukrainian military.

“ when Russia stole it.”

Are you for real?

Crimea was part of Russia until 1954, when the Ukrainian head of the Soviet Union (Krushchev) stole it and added it to the Ukrainian SSR.

> The Ukies bombing the ethnic Russian provinces since 2014 is a war crime. <

It’s probably more of a crime against humanity, but I won’t argue against your characterization.

Now here’s where it gets sticky. At what point should a foreign power cross a sovereign border - and start a bloody war - to stop such a crime? It’s not an easy call. I would say that such an action should have a very high barrier.

For example, should the US now start a war to stop North Korea from starving its citizens? Should the UK have invaded the US in 1850 to free the slaves from their misery? Tough questions from a moral point of view.

Vietnam - was to stop the spread of Communism.

Afghanistan 1 - was to stop the expansion of Soviet influence. Semi-failed

Iraq 1 - was to oust Hussein from/for Kuwait.

Afghanistan 2 - was about revenge for 9/11

Iraq 2 - was about ousting Hussein/Revenge for attempting to Murder Bush 41

Ukraine - TBD. There is no direct US benefit, only the thieves who run our government benefit. The other strategic arguments are simply theories.

I agree. The Russians are fools to be fighting another Afghanistan-style war where the locals hate them.

Lots of moral issues, twists and turns. How about this scenario?

Belarus becomes part of the Russian Federation? Much talk amongst the Belorussians that they feel threatened by NATO, Poland especially. Reunification with Russia would give them superpower security.

I would absolutely love to see that develop….NATO encroachment backfired.

This whole thing saddens me. I am unabashedly a Russophile. I have a deep respect for the Russian people, and for all the misery they have endured. First came an invasion by Napoleon. And then one by Kaiser Wilhelm II. And then one by Hitler. The Russian people suffered greatly due to invasions from the west. And yet they persevered.

I even took a semester of Russian in college to get some feel for the language.

It’s on my bucket list to shake hands with a defender of Stalingrad. What remarkable men they were! But time marches on. I suppose that item will never be checked off.

Anyway, Russia is just wrong when it comes to Ukraine. They just are. Please see my post #43.

Vietnam fell to the communists. 50,000 young American soldiers dead. Hundreds of thousands maimed & injured.

Afghanistan is now in hands of Taliban with ISIS & Al Qaeda operating. Trillions added to national debt.

Ousting Saddam Hussein transformed a controlled middle-east into the biggest chaos ever. ISIS was born and committing terror acts as we speak. Trillions added to the national debt.

But neocons do not show any regrets and learn nothing. They need to get through there thick skulls, we are no longer a super power playing role of world police. Not with $32 Trillion nationa debtl 50% larger than GDP.

US Treasury will pay out nearly $600 Billion in interest to service national debt for fiscal year ending in September 2023. That amount is scheduled to double next year due to higher interest rates Treasury has to pay due to inflation.

Well, Ukraine did give us a reason to impeach President Trump. They tried to take Vindman off our hands although they were not successful, but they tried and they deserve credit. They also gave Hunter Biden and a few other American oligarchs large salaries which enriched the economy of the United States. There are probably several drug dealers that profited handsomely off of Hunter Biden alone, and the downstream economic effects help raise the standard of living of marginalized people. I’m sure if we think harder we can come up with all sorts of benefits that we have gotten from Ukraine.

Most folks aren’t aware of it, but NATO was formed years before the Warsaw Pact. So, yes. Russia (at that time, the Soviet Union) really did have reason to wonder what the hell was going on.

It’s not like in the movies. There are no 100% good guys here. The Soviets did inappropriate things. And so did NATO. It is a real shame that neither side could take into account the concerns of the other.

The same sort of thing is true today.

Crimea is as much a part of Russia as is Moscow. The Russians would nuke Ukraine before surrendering control.
