Video games have come a long way since the Atari was released in 1977. From super-realistic graphics to complex storylines and deep gameplay, games have already ascended far beyond what most people in the late '70s ever thought was possible...
Some of those games are truly timeless, often because their design is simple enough that it'll always be fun or their artistry leaves an impact that can't go out of style. On the other hand, there are some that, while they're still remembered and revered for their influence historically, just don't stand the test of time. Much of what was groundbreaking about them has become a near necessity in modern games, making their greatest achievements seem uninteresting and commonplace by today's standards.
10 Pitfall (1982) Atari
9 Resident Evil (1996) PlayStation
8 Grand Theft Auto III (2001) PlayStation 2
Anyone who was alive at the time will know just how controversial Grand Theft Auto III was at the time of its release. The entire concept of being a criminal and acting out those actions in video game form was completely new, and parents didn't know how to handle it....GTA3's lackluster controls would come off as unacceptable for players of the more recent entries in the series.
7 Tomb Raider (1996) PlayStation & Sega Saturn
6 Deus Ex (2000) PC
5 GoldenEye 007 (1997) Nintendo 64
4 Crash Bandicoot (1996) PlayStation
3 Mortal Kombat (1992) Arcade
Mortal Kombat's brand of dark, intense combat and violent fatalities isn't lost on a new generation of gamers, but its simplistic gameplay certainly is... the original Mortal Kombat is even out-shadowed by other fighters from its era that stood up better over time, like Street Fighter 2.
2 Call Of Duty (2003) PC
1 Metroid (1986) NES

Why not run DOS Box? I’ve had trouble with it, but my daughter does just fine.
Deus Ex is still a great game, one of my favorites of all time.
It has a great storyline, with a lot of conspiracy predictions. More than a few of those predictions are coming close to real events happening today: the release of a pandemic virus exploited to increase govt power, the labeling of people wanting freedom from tyranny as “terrorists”, the rise of the Deep State, etc. It is almost uncanny.
Deus Ex is available on Steam, and I recommend it. There is a good review at

DukeNukem 3D. It holds up.
“and I’m all out of bubblegum”
What is this crap fest? Screw this author. His arguments boil down to old games not being understood by new players spoiled on the latest graphics. He does have a point that today’s privileged morons have no patience for anything older than 4 minutes, (and know nothing more than 5 minutes old) but that doesn’t make it right.
Nonsense. We're now *living* the backstory of this game...
Agreed; pinging you as we echoed the same sentiment.
No map for one which hampers navigation greatly and the fact that all the areas are identical doesn’t help.
I still play Might & Magic 6, 7 & 8 on PC - vintage late 90’s - especially since some smart guy mashed them together into a single game you can play through with the same characters. It’s like my “comfort game” that I return to again and again, even though I’ve beaten it many times.
I still have the old Atari games modded for PC, and all of the original NES game ROMs that I play using an emulator. I guess I prefer simplicity of play to fancy graphics and complicated interfaces. Hey - it’s my time to waste, after all.

I left gaming with “Tanks”.
Might as well play Solitaire.
Leisure Suite Larry was elected POTUS in 2020.
Download a free program called: DOSBox
It’s available for Windows, Mac OS and Linux.
It should allow you to run most of those old DOS games.
BTW, the Commander Keen games were awesome, good times.
