INTERLACHEN, Fla. — Putnam County Sheriff’s Office said a 67-year-old woman shot and killed a man they said forced his way into her home with a gun.
The man was identified as 64-year-old Reginald Best.
According to the police report, the 67-year-old said she heard the door handle shaking around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday morning and grabbed a gun to see what was going on. She told deputies she thought it could have been her husband because he works late, odd hours.

I don’t remember my grandfather when he was 64 years old “being on something”, other than a blob of Vick’s Vapo-Rub he rubbed on his chest occasionally to clear out his sinuses and when us grandkids were watching, he’d take a blob of that crap and eat it, not sure if there was any medicinal value but the gross factor was off the charts.
He was pretty worn out from being a successful painting contractor. The only doorknob he would ever have been jiggling at 3:30 in the morning would have been the bathroom door.
I’m sure there were 64 year old drug vagrants back in the late ‘60’s and early ‘70’s when my grandfather was in his 60’s, but they were few and far between…they kept themselves hidden.

Yes, that’s what I would do too. I’m that age, I have Arthritis and due to a hereditary condition, I bruise easily. I’m not going to take any chances of damaging myself by wrestling around with an assailant, who knows what kind internal trauma someone could inflict upon this old body with a sucker punch or any punch delivered to a soft tissue area.
I live by 2 tenets concerning my castle doctrine or personal/family safety. #1-Kill them all and let God sort it out. #2-I’d rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6!
Every career has occupational hazards…this guy didn’t do a proper cost benefit analysis before he stepped onto that porch.
In many jurisdictions assault on an elderly person (depending on venue, elderly can start as low as 55!) is an enhancement to the crime, simple assault becomes felony assault, or even attempted murder!
That’s why the solution is not less guns but MORE.......in the hands of well trained individuals whether professional or private citizens is an effective deterrent.
Robberies in pawn shops and gun stores are rare if ever.....why? Because criminals know employees open carry... what a concept right?

If the toxicology comes back positive for drugs on this guy I hope the sheriff runs down who gave it to him and put them in jail also.
My stepbrother died from fentenal and that’s exactly what happened.....the detectives successfully located who he bought the pills from and they were arrested.
I suspect when your real first name is Homer you do 2 things
1. Get tough as a kid and don’t take any crap
2. Find yourself a good nickname

Whether mental episodes or drugs were the cause of his agitated state, breaking into a home at 3 am and brandishing a gun is reason enough for the woman to rightfully fear for her life and that of her aged mother and respond with deadly force. A very sad incident.
There is an Interlachen florida? The lowest point in Switzerland is about double the height of the highest point in florida.

I'm talking about guilt in the court of public opinion.
This isn't a situation with clarity, like where we have a dead criminal with a rap sheet and an attendant feel-good conclusion to the story.
There is a tragic dimension to this story, if the dead man was mentally ill.
As such, anti-gunners will say "oh, if there wasn't a gun he'd still be alive and get treatment and she didn't have to kill him why didn't she call the police or make him a cup of coffee blah blah blah."
I'm siding with the innocent homeowner who didn't ask for this choice to be made.
I just think it’s funny that a town barely above sea level is named after a village in the Alps.
Yeah most people don’t realize how flat the state is until they get here, there’s a few rolling hills between Ocala and Tampa, also some around Tallahassee. Other than that it’s about as flat as a pool table....being that the whole state is just a giant slab of limestone covered in sand.
Also, Switzerland Florida is 52 miles north of Interlachen. I guess someone was trying to bring a little europe to the sunshine state.....however I can assure you neither towns resemble their European counterparts. 😏

I was raised in South Florida.
Riding our bikes down sloped driveways was a thrill. If you were a real daredevil you would ride your bide down one of the intracoastal bridges. They may have been 20’ tall or so with a five degree slope!
My house was 6.5’ above sea level. Because of that “.5” we didn’t have to have flood insurance.
When I visited the Bok Tower for the first time in the sixth grade I was stunned by the height of the “mountain”. It is 295 feet above sea level.
Florida is really, really flat.
And as many yankees and other blue state refugees are finding out......it’s quite warm most of the time as well......and that the mosquitoe is the state bird 😏

I never realized how humid until I moved to New Mexico in 2006.
Dad died later that year and we had to go back for his memorial service in January 2007. We had been gone for less than a year, but we felt like we had been hit with a wet blanket getting off the airplane.
We stayed in a hotel on Federal Highway near our old home. The kids complained they couldn’t get to sleep with all the noise. They had gotten used to NM quiet. From within the hotel room you could hear the traffic, the jets passing over, just a constant noise that you get used to when you live with it all the time.
The next morning we were waiting for a break in traffic to pull out onto Federal Highway. Another reminder. We had to wait maybe two or three minutes for a break in traffic. Rarely happens in New Mexico and never on a Saturday morning. While I was waiting I noticed the copious amount of trash in the gutter. Again...
There are more people in Broward County than the entire state of New Mexico. We may have messed up politics, but we are working on that. The air is clean, the vistas are stunning, you can afford the land, camping is fun (it is NOT fun in South Florida) and as long as you don’t live in Albuquerque or Santa Fe, the people are great.
You couldn’t pay me to move back to South Florida.
