Mental health problems such as depression are most common in the hospitality and real estate sectors.
Researchers found significant gender disparities of common mental health problems against females in over half of the twenty industries studied, with the highest gap being in the arts, entertainment and recreation industry.
About one in seven people in the workplace experiences mental health problems, and women are nearly twice as likely to have mental health problems as men. More than half of all sickness absence days can be attributed to mental health conditions.
The team found an overall increase in the proportion of people reporting mental health problems, up from 16.0% in 2012–14 to 18.8% in 2016–2018.
Common mental health problems were most prevalent among those who were not working, with around one in three (33.7%) people reporting problems. In the hospitality sector (accommodation and food services) and real estate, just under one in four people (23.8% and 23.6, respectively) reported mental health problems.
The lowest prevalence was seen among professional, scientific and technical activities (15.0%), agriculture, forestry and fishing (9.6%) and mining and quarrying (6.2%).
In the majority of industries (11 out of 20), mental health problems were more common among females than they were among males. This was highest in the arts, entertainment and recreation sector, where more than one in four women (26.0%) reported problems compared to around one in 20 (5.6%) of men. Not working also appeared to have a much bigger impact on females (45.0%) compared to males (21.7%).
Previous studies have identified some risk factors that have gender-specific impacts on mental health. For example, working full-time decreases the risk of mental problems among males, but not among females; fixed-term contract only increases the risk of mental problems among females.

Fascinating, these are the toughest, most physically demanding and dangerous of jobs. I think we have a tip here as to why our ancestors were far less whining crybabies and virtue signallers than we are

I had two female bosses at the end of my career. One was the best boss I ever had. She was married and a mom. She knew how to manage people.
The other one was the worst, meanest, vilest boss I ever had. She was married, but never had kids. She didn’t have a clue about how to manage people.
First thing that jumped out at me is that both real estate and hospitality workers have to always be nice, sweet, polite, and truly truly interested in their customers, even when they went to tell them to go suck rocks.
Perfect formula for depression, whether men or women.
From a biological perspective, the crazy may be a feature, not a bug. Both male and female sex hormones cause delusions and temporary insanity, with the biological result being procreation.
Years past I would say that women belong barefoot and in the kitchen but now I say, send them to the mines.
I don’t know about real estate but there are a lot of functional addicts in the hospitality industry.
“fixed-term contract only increases the risk of mental problems among females.” True. Some ladies like to have a big house, kids, a dog and spending money. Some ladies do not like 9a-6p desk jobs. Proof: The 400,000 people working the 1960-1970 Apollo Program regularly worked 60 hours a week for ten years and very few ladies were among them. The few ladies working on the Apollo were some of the brightest and designed key panels for the command module.

Granted, I no longer care to SERVE The General Public, but none of it made me depressed or suicidal. Even as I was getting shot at, or on those days when a ‘Karen’ needed to ‘Speak to the Manager,’ LOL! (Me!)
We’ve got two generations now of weakt*ts who have been coddled since birth. And you can see the problems that has produced in our current disaster of a Society.
