Weekly Garden Thread - February 11-17, 2023 [All Things Chicken-Related Edition]
February 11, 2023 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memoriam

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Mulberries! Ugh! Beau actually planted two of those trash trees on purpose! He loves mulberries for some reason, but when they’re ripe, he’s always up at our cabin for Bear Training Season, and somehow I always ‘forget’ to pick them before the birds get them and ‘poop purple’ all over the place!

Sorry about your seed heat mishap. At least there’s still time to recoup your losses!

Glad the chickens got extra Superbowl treats. It was a fun game; I skipped all the stupidity to start and half time. Again, Ugh! These people. Just shut up and play the game!

Only things we didn’t eat when I was raised was the oink or the moo or the feathers or antlers

That's what you call using everything but the squeal.

So many thanks, waterhill. I love storytelling, and I love that you can tell a music video story in between a day and a week of work. Writing fiction takes a LOT longer.

A story of a Special Forces officer protecting the doctor that he loves who hates violence

Descendants of the Sun - I Will Hold My Ground - Darryl Worley

https://youtu.be/GSMDQoTlNK8

The story of a cat who becomes a boy when near a girl who draws cartoons. She was in love with the man who had found the cat as a kitten but couldn’t keep him due to allergies. When he thought she’d abandoned the kitten, he broke up with her. But then he discovers that the boy living with her is NOT her cousin, but is the cat/boy, who is not pleased at the man’s suggestion that she get her cat fixed.

How about some funny stories?

A story about a famous doctor who goes into a coma and becomes a coma ghost. He can only inhabit the body of an incompetent student whose only claim to fame is that his family owns the hospital. Oh, and also being the only one who can see ghosts. Now the famous doctor has to help the incompetent one perform surgery on the coma-struck body of the doctor, himself.

Ghost Doctor - Like A Surgeon - “Weird Al” Yankovic - with Lyrics

This one really doesn’t need an explanation.

Hi, I have a few questions about your post on 1/27 and the beneficial bug mix in pots - This is the text -
DIANA’S BENEFICIAL BUG MIX:

Cilantro
Dill (’Bouquet’ short variety)
Blue Bachelor Buttons
Orange or Yellow Calendula
Cosmos (any SHORT variety/color)
Persian Carpet Zinnia
Borage (just a little; it readily self-seeds!)

Mix together a standard-size packet of each seed, but go easy on the Borage. Trust me! I start this seed mix in 4” pots than either put a ‘plug’ of them here and there in garden beds or grow four, 4” pots to a big pot situated somewhere in the garden. These varieties bring in lovely things like Lacewings and REAL Ladybugs and other GOOD BUGS that will keep the BAD BUGS under control in your garden.

If you plant extra for cutting, this combo makes for the sweetest, prettiest little bouquet on your kitchen table. It’s a WIN/WIN! :)

My questions - I saved this and would like to try it this year. We don’t really have a bug problem at all but it would be nice to add some color to the garden as long as it is controlled. Do you stick the pot in the ground, do you just start them in pots and then plant the plug? I am leaning towards leaving in the pot and planting it. I have some of the seeds on the list but as the two stores in town that have seeds, everything is Burpee. No borage at all. No bachelors buttons and no persian carpet zinnias. Just tall ones.
I will be heading to a menards next week. I usually grow dill and cilantro anyway. Also would a shot of bloom booster be good or just some miracle grow? Thanks for the advice.

I start them in 4” puts, then either transplant the ‘plug’ into a (south, sunny) corner of a raised bed, or I have taken those 4” plugs and put 3 of them into a larger pot, then nestled that in, somewhere in or near the garden, also in a sunny spot.

The only fertilizer they get is some Miracle Grow in the watering can when I remember it - these herbs and flowers are not fussy at all.

If you can’t find the ‘Persian Carpets’ Zinnia, they are now also calling them Zinnia ‘Jazzy Mix.’ I just saw them offered in the Select Seeds catalog.

You could also substitute the short version of Cosmos, ‘Sunset Orange’ which is an AAS Winner and shockingly bright orange.

Spent the last few hours cleaning/reorganizing the seedling room and sowed 30 peas.

Grabbing a couple of heat mats from ebay for $12/ea. https://www.ebay.com/itm/254759712271

Seed Factor ???

Rated for 10-20 degrees F over ambient temp which is fine in most cases.

Getting some of these lights that are not grow lights but are 6500k; https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08B4LCPTV

It’s what I found cheap and I’m all about cheap. The two grow lights I have are $20/ea and the above are $44 for 6 so even if I have to double up, it’s still cheaper. At 1,100 Lumens, I suspect doubling up will be best. Gonna get a 6 pack to start with and get another if it looks like I need to, once I see how bright they are.

Not set up for hanging but I’m handy so I’ll come up with a way.

“The coroner recorded the dead as one by “misadventure,” though they noted that he also appeared to have a heart attack at the time of the vicious chicken mauling.”
