Fears of worsening egg shortage in New Zealand as fire kills 75,000 hens at farm

A fire at New Zealand’s largest egg producer has killed about 75,000 hens, sparking fears that a national egg shortage could worsen.

The fire at a Zeagold farm broke out on Monday morning and had “taken better part of the day to contain”, a spokesperson for the company said. Twelve workers who were on site were “unharmed but very distressed”, the spokesperson said. Work was under way to assess how many hens had died, but Zeagold estimated it to be about 75,000.

The fire may have ripple effects beyond the immediate demise of the hens, with concerns it may worsen a national scarcity of eggs.

Zeagold’s spokesperson said it was still too early to say how much of an effect the fire would have on the overall supply chain, saying: “There will be some impact obviously – it’s not a great thing to happen in the middle of a shortage.”

MtnClimber :" Is there a trend ? "

HeavyMetal : "eggesactly"

deport :” .. The cause of the reduction in egg production is still unknown,
but some suggest that the feed’s new formulation may have a lower protein content."
Also See the “hot link” in Post #18 for a partial explanation about reduced egg production

V_TWIN : Post #14 :” Yes a “filler” (Melamine which is a type of plastic) that came from china
was an ingredient in dog and cat pet food that played a large part in shortening the life of 2 of my cats."

(My Comment) : All true !
Some reduction of egg production during winter is to be expected as laying hens are photo-sensitive (depends on the amount of sunlight, or artificial provided light).
However, the fact that there is such an abrupt change in egg laying production is a certain cause for concern.
To my mind, a chicken egg is a protein "bomb": high protein which comes encapsulated within its own protective cover, and can last for months.
And lastly, V_TWIN's comment about the use of poisonous melamine, supplied in Chinese feed supplies in pet feed is an historical fact.
Also, the use of 'well aged' chicken manure for the use in gardens and fields is a known agricultural practice, as fresh chicken manure is considered too 'hot' (with nitrogen).

Some believe there is an attack on chickens and egg production because of research revealing there are antibodies in eggs that effectively fight covid.

"...as fresh chicken manure is considered too 'hot' (with nitrogen)."

Ammonia (in chicken and hog manure) is very toxic to other plants, until well-composted and diluted with straw/hay and other manures or soils.

Here's my former business' compost "pile" -- several hundred tons -- with 2 of my 38 employees in front, for scale...

There has been a low rumbling in the chicken raisers about a shortage of oyster shell.

I have slightly over a ton of it so no personal experience but if you do not feed the chickens enough calcium they do not lay.

Worse they may become egg bound which is a problem you really do not want to have.

Is it to the advantage of the owners to see the operations burn, and then use insurance proceeds to build a new state-of-the art facility?

No.

These facilities need to have a full fence with razor wire atop surrounding it with gated/badged access only.

Anyone seen approaching a facility such as this should be detained, questioned and if not forthcoming or compliant...shot on sight.
Expensive? Yes. But better that than eggspensive.

It's getting ridiculous.

Watch to see if the Xao Bi-Dung regime outlaws HCQ, Ivermectin and eggs/chickens. "C'mon man, chickens eat crickets. Just cut out the middleman, man".

Nobody is trying to deprive you of eggs. There is over 230,000 commercial Chicken farms and almost 20,000 commercial egg farms. An increase in egg farms of a little over 5% from 2022 to 2023.

Harmless Teddy Bear : "There has been a low rumbling in the chicken raisers about a shortage of oyster shell..."

Yes, all that chicken egg production requires supplemental calcium sources.
Most egg 'laying mash' includes calcium from a variety of sources including crushed oyster shell, of which most consumers are totally unaware.
This also represents the interdependence of other sources of vitamins and minerals that are found in our food production, with poultry highly dependent on aquaculture for calcium.
